I just got off the phone with a mom who is in the hospital still (had her baby Tuesday), and has a bunch of breastfeeding problems thanks to our lovely formula-pushing hospital here in town. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/splat.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="splat"><br><br>
She was given a bottle to use for supplementing (by the LC on staff) that they told her will teach her baby how to suck at the breast (her baby is having trouble latching on). I have never heard of such a thing, and I don't put it past these LCs to just have made this up given what I have seen them do in the past.<br><br>
Help me out here......have any of you ever heard of such a thing? Not that I would believe it works, I don't understand the logic of how a bottle is going to teach breastfeeding.<img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/dizzy.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Dizzy">: <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/banghead.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="banghead">

Uhhhh...no. Breastfeeding teaches breastfeeding...like eating an apple doesn't teach you how to sip soup...<br><br>
In fact, introducing a bottle will CREATE problems, specifically milk production/supply and nipple confusion..this is setting her up for a world of hurt. She needs to stop now, go to bed with baby for several days (I suggest at least 3) and have maximum skin to skin contact in order to reestablish her supply and their nursing relationship.<br><br>
also check out kellymom.com...seriously THE BEST breastfeeding site out there that I've found...refer her to her local La Leche League as well..

i'm no expert, but it seems like with help from experienced LCs bottlefeeding could be done in a way to help correct latching problems... but i'm sure if done inexpertly it will cause more than it solves. bottom line - i'd want to know just how experienced her lactation support people are (IBCLCs?), not what particular methods they are suggesting.

They weren't talking about a Haberman feeder, were they? I know they use that for babes with feeding trouble sometimes, but I forget exactly how they work... should go google it...

No, it was a Haberman.<br><br>
The LC at the hospital are IBCLC....but honestly, that doesn't mean much to me anymore, esp given the advice that I have seen.<br><br>
I am just glad that we finally have an independent IBCLC in town. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile">

maybe they were recommending the Breastflow bottles? We bought these to use on occasion and they actually require a ton of sucking effort, very similar to the technique for bf'ing. They were designed with LC suggestions and the nipples are really different than any other bottle.
