Boy calls 911, gets ig'ed.

I was watching the news yesterday and today, and it would seem that this little boy's mom collapsed at home, and he called 911, (he is 6 years old) and he got ignored, and chastised for "playing with the phone" and hung up, and then he tried again 3 hours later, and once again did not get taken seriously, and once again hung up. His mom died.

This story upsets me on so many different levels. I just had to see what you guys thought of it.

I mean, in one of the phone calls, he says very clearly "My mom passed out." I mean, what would have been the big deal for that phone operator just to send out a police officer to check the home out to make sure it was ok???

The last I heard that phone operator was still working, and has not even been so much as reprimanded as of yet!

I saw that too. It made me so angry. Why is it that they tell us to teach our DC to call 911. Then they do and they get yelled at for "playing with the phone". It is truly sickening. The poor boy looked so defeated as they were playing the call back. It absolutely broke my heart.
Oh, so you had not heard about it? I heard about it the first time yesterday on CNN and then again this morning on one of those morning shows (don't know which one it was) and the family has hired a lawyer and is sueing that state. (Don't know which state it was, sorry. ADD mother.)

The boy did what he was supposed to do, and the system failed that family. Their defense is: Well, 25% of the calls that come in to 911 are prank calls. To me, that is not a good enough excuse.

i thought it was michigan, possibly in detroit.
I saw that, too. When he cried out in frustration ("AUGH!!!!") I cried. That woman should be fired.

Typically, where I grew up, if somebody called 911, even if they suspected it of being a prank, they still sent a police officer over. Except for that one time when my mom had a knife to my throat and was threatening to kill me, and she had the cordless while I was on the other phone begging the 911 operator to send police because I thought she was going to kill me. My mom, the sociopath she is, was talking and joking with the operator, and I still remember the woman on the phone saying "Yeah, I have teenagers, I know how they are... always exaggerating!" Little did she know my mom actually did have a knife pressed against my throat.

I was in Detroit. I am not far from there so it has been fairly local news to us.

My goodness! Sad thing is, that boy would have probably been better off just hanging up as soon as they answered!! At least here, he would have been, since they have to investigate all calls, especially hang-ups.
The operator should be charged with manslaughter and the fine for prank-calling 911 should go up to pay for the lawsuit settlement the family should receive. (Not that any amount of money can pay for seeing your mother die in front of you at age 6, but having to spend a ton of money would make that call center improve their training practices immediately.)

I totally agree! This is completely outrageous! In this case, the 911 operator has an absolute responsibility to treat every call as if it were life-and-death situation despite that she feels it may be a prank. When they ignore calls on their own discretion, this is the result; people die. I am an absolute shock she still has her job. I saw a clip on this on the Today Show and they family is suing. I hope they win millions.

They've hired Geoffrey Feiger, one of the most controversial lawyers in Detroit and elsewhere. He's been accused, quite likely correctly, of being somewhat flexible on the whole ethics things, but he is one of the most successful litigators in MI. He'll win--the question is if the city will hide behind their horrific fiscal messes to avoid having to pay out any damages.
I saw that too and it grieved me for that boy. He was with her for hours and watched her die and his 'voice' was not only mocked but not heard or respected.

Evidently there is a new computer system in Detroit that makes it hard for the operators to hear the calls. The operator couldn't hear the caller. But yet she chewed him out for calling. I really think the first operator should have sent an officer out. She threatened to send an officer if the boy didn't get his mother and when he didn't get his mother, she didn't follow through. And his mother died.

What saddens me further is that he probably sat there waiting for an officer. He was five at the time and just turned six. It was three hours before he called again. I can only imagine the emotions he went through during that time.

I am praying for this boy and his family. I want him to grow up knowing that his voice is valuable and that he is a courageous, brave person. I am so sad that his mother died. I want him to have his mother back.

ETA: According for the 911 operators union spokeswoman, the recording that we hear on TV has been enhanced. She impled that this new system has been causing problems for a while. Also, she said that the first operator had just had two prank calls from children on the same street as this boy and thought it was a continuation. I can totally understand her not taking it seriously, (if she, in fact, could not understand that he had said "My mother has passed out.") , but I really wish she would have followed protocols and sent an officer out like she threatened to do.

If the City of Detriots protocals do not insist that all calls be taken seriously because of the high rate of prank calls then their protocals need to be revamped asap. I can totally understand that bereaved families desire for wrongful death lawsuit. I just hope the City Government is ethical about the whole thing and does try to scapegoat the operator or try to dismiss the tragedy entirely.

Yeah, she chewed him out, too. I don't think they are hiding them because the lawyer said that the state was cooperating by not covering up or destroying the tapes, and that he hopes they follow through and do the right thing for the family.

In one phone call they played, the boy clearly says: "My mom has passed out." And then this operator immediately starts telling him to put an adult on the phone. And of course there is no adult there to put on the phone, so she chews him out.

What i don't understand is why she is still on the job. As of yesterday, they said something about how they saw no reason to reprimand her as of yet, and if they did, they would take care of it...basically.
Yeah, when I saw whow the lawyer was I knew they'd win. Just a matter of what is exposed and what is covered up. I am still enraged about it.
