Boycott A&P, Dominion and Ultra:Food&Drug

This Grocery store chain is celebrating "Baby Appreciation Month". Their flyers has 4 pages worth of baby products and 2-1/2 out of 4 pages are dedicated to formula!

Please write to the management about your displeasure with their 'celebration'. I know I'm boycotting them.

this isn't the first time they have done stuff like this..

their BABY bonus club had lots of crap relating to formula too... loblaws is no better either *sigh*

I am going to write them, do you have a contact?
This would be a great thing to contact
http://www.promom.org about.
See their 3 minute activist page.
They'll get the letters going!

These stores are not in my area so I can't but I HIGHLY recommend that you do!
i noticed that in the flyers, too, and was upset. they have been doing this for awhile.

also, isn't part of the who code that formula labels are not supposed to have pictures of babies on them?-one of the formulas in the a&p flyer had a mom and a baby on it.
I contacted www.infactcanada.ca about this issue. I urge you all to do the same.

I plan on calling the number of the flyer (1-877-76-FRESH) to get an email address of management to make a complaint.

May be it's time to join that expensive, expensive co-op we have! (I think it's $500+/year just to be a member).

I hated it when Presidents Choice came out with their formula. I've been meaning to tell them about that. I don't think I'm ready yet to boycott them

It's a grocery store having a sale on infant formula...All grocery stores sell formula, including Whole Foods, and sometimes there are sales...

They are violating the WHO code with the pic thing, but otherwise....
Having a sale and advertising it is also violating the WHO code.

Yes, but some advertise it more blatantly than others. A&P chain seems to have a long standing record for that.

It is also so sad to think that LLL often uses the donations from both A&P and Loblaws for their events, but that's a whole other topic.
I've lost my mind. I didn't realize sales were violations of the WHO code.

Carry on.
Having a sale on a product that every store sells is worthy of a boycott?
They are not taking any kind of stance on formula. They are just selling it. I have no problem with that. Every grocery store sells it.

As for the amount of space in the flyer, there are pretty much two products at a grocery store for infants. Diapers and Formula. If they are dedicating 4 pages to their sale, the amount af advertising for the formula seems somewhat resonable.

Oh, well, JMO.

Have you ever heard of "The Who Code?" The World Health Organization and UNICEF Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes came about because these groups urge formula manufacturers not to advertise formula. Why? Because studies show that these ads sway mothers who have not decided how to feed their babies, and babies' health suffers as a result.

The Who Code is required by law in many countries, not including the USA, but possibly including Canada. That's right, it is actually illegal to advertise formula in many countries.
No need to attack me...geez!
IN MY OPINION....it doesn't bother me. It is not the formula that is advertising itself. It is a store advertising a sale.
(Yes, I breastfed my son till he was two and a half, never used formula)
I'd personally like Formula to be prescription only (like it is is several countries), and have no advertising, but that's a far off goal of mine.

Anyway, I just don't understand how selling formula is a celebrtion of children?? Breastfeeding is a celebration of children! Every bit of advertising like this just perpetuates the societal attitude that FORMULA is normal

(and maybe formula is the current 'normal' in North America but it certainly should not be!)

I have never heard of the chain. It would seem to me though, if it was really a baby sale, they would have more than just formula. Yes, there are a few other things, but the bulk of the baby section is formula. Also, there is not a single bf product - breastpads, pumps, storage bags, lansinoh, etc. Maybe I'm lucky with our Krogers here, the formula makes up a realatively small section of the baby aisle, and they just added all kinds of Lansinoh products in addition to the bf stuff they already had.

i think this is a great point, these are other items that *could* be included in the 'celebration' flyer (if the formula companies weren't paying for the space, that is
