My baby is here! (kind of long)

Brandon William Zachary
Born: September 2, 2003
At 38 weeks
Weight: 6 lbs. 15 oz.
Length: 20 1/2 in.

At 2:15 a.m. my water broke. I called the birth center at 2:57 and since I live two hours away, packed some extra stuff then left. At 3:15 I started having mild contractions At 5:15 we got to the birth center where it was confirmed that indeed it was amniotic fluid that I was leaking and the countdown has begun. My mw checked me and I was 2 cm, 80% effaced. I was chatting away with my doula who was with me the whole time and during contractions she would help me breathe deeply. At around 12 p.m. (noon) I was at 3 1/2 cm and the contractions grew a lot stronger. I felt them really in my back. My doula and dh were applying counterpressure o relieve me. I was quiet then, and concentrated. At 7-8 cm I got in the jacuzzi tub. The pain was excruciating -- I was having back labor. The tub relieved it and relaxed me enough so I could continue the deep breathing. My other doula was also helping me together with my dh, applying counterpressure as hard as they could. The contractions were really intense and I honestly thought I couldn't go through with it. Turned out later baby was posterior and at only in transition did he decide to turn (which was also painful in itself, but I'm glad!). Dh was helping me breathe and got in the tub with me when pushing began at 7:00 p.m. It seemed like forever until I felt his soft little head. It was the most amazing thing! With three more pushes he was out, at 7:18. I pulled him out and dh cut the cord. I was so overwhelmed I didn't even cry. It was a beautiful moment. I was also sooo relieved to have that back pressure over with.

I found out later that not only was baby posterior, but also born with the cord wrapped around his neck and shoulder. His shoulders were also coming out the difficult way and I have internal tears as a result. In addition, before I could push, mw and doula had to remove a lip (of the cervix) that was in the way. I had stitches too, and bled a little too much. However, my mw was great, and helped me with IV fluids and lots of support since my hemoglobin was lower than the norm (9).

It was all worth it. A difficult birth, but with wonderful help from my dh, doulas and mw. I honestly couldn't believe that I could handle that much pain, but I did! Yes, we women are born to do this!

I love my baby!
To me he's the most beautiful little person in the world. It's been a breeze so far taking care of him and I'm loving it! My milk just came in yesterday and I've been nursing on demand :bf It's wonderful!
