While I was home for Spring Break, my seventh grade sister was telling me about the benefits of breastfeeding for an infant's immune system. My mom (who breastfeed all three of us for over a year ) asked her where she learned all this information. She said, "DUH mom! We're in sex ed and sex makes babies so we learn about infant development!" I would have never thought to include breastfeeding ed as part of sex ed, but I guess it makes sense. Anyways, I was super excited that she's been learning about breastfeeding!

I go in to a middle school home ec class a couple times a year and teach a class on "care and feeding of babies". I bring my dd with me, she's 3 now, and I talk all about bfing, CDing, slinging, etc... I always hope that I'm giving them something to think about.

That's awesome! I don't remember breastfeeding being part of sex ed at my schools. I just remember everyone giggling over the penis pictures...

I remember lip service being paid to bf'ing. "Breast is best, less risk of ear infections blah blah blah" "And this is how you prepare a formula bottle." Our Family & Consumer Sciences teacher was unable to have children (we got the infertility speech in class...kind of sad actually, she is a nice lady) so she didn't have a lot of experience in that area.

Ah yes, I remember being introduced to breastfeeding in sex ed class (nobody in my family breastfed at the time). My teacher said something that has stuck with me for years. "Why would you go through the fuss of getting up to make bottles when you have two prewarmed, premade bottles right here *pointed to her big 'ol floppy teacher breasts*" It had the entire class giggling, but it definitely made an impression. It was a much less uncomfortable lesson than the day she mimed how to put a tampon in.
