Break the Tie! "Breastfeeding Beyond Infancy" or "Breastfeeding the Older Nursling"

In the most recent poll, 48 people voted that the name of this forum should be changed. 16 people voted that the name should not be changed.

29 people voted for "Breastfeeding Beyond Infancy."

29 people voted for "Breastfeeding the Older Nursling."

All of the other possible names received significantly fewer votes.

If the mods honor our wishes, the name of this forum will be changed, and the new name will be Breastfeeding Beyond Infancy or Breastfeeding the Older Nursling.

I think everyone should have the opportunity to declare their preference between the two.

Then, I think we should all get behind the majority's choice, because I think most of us agree that either of these names (or anything really) would be preferable to "extended breastfeeding."

Thank you!

I like Breastfeeding the Older Nursling because it makes me think of nursing older kids (like my 3 yo) whereas Breastfeeding Beyond Infancy makes me think of younger babies (not quite toddlers, but not little tiny babies). Does that make sense? :LOL I think "older nursling" seems less limiting

I voted for "Breastfeeding the Older Nursling" I agree that it sounds more like nursing an older child compared to nursing a younger child, yet not a newborn. But my DS is only 6 mo so I don't know if I am realy qualifited to vote... oh well.

Also, what is so wrong with "Extended Breastfeeding"? It seems like a lot of the mommas here don't like that term and I am curious why that is.

I think the feeling is that it isn't "extended," it's just breastfeeding. Calling it extended can make it seem like you're breastfeeding past when it's supposed to be over or that you're doing it too long. The new titles describe this forum more accurately (I think) to call it Breastfeeding an older... (nursling, baby).

This is exciting!

I was just thinking of this and wondering when and who was going to do it.:LOL

I agree with the others who say "the older nursling" is more descriptive for a forum that includes 3 & 5 yo nurslings and beyond.

Now, where is the begging smilie? Please Cynthia! Peggy! Give us a new forum name!

I also like Breastfeeding the Older Nursling! I think using the term infancy is more limiting! My three year old is definitely a little girl and don't tell her otherwise!:LOL I hope the name change takes place!

I voted "older nursling." How about "Nursing your college student"...for a few of us! I want my own forum! J/K. :LOL
I wonder if the age of the mama's nursling affects how she votes? I think if you are nursing an 18 mo old "Breastfeeding Beyond Infancy" might sound better, but if your nursing a 4 or 5 yo infancy is just not in your vocabulary when it comes to your child? I know that it has been years since I would even consider my older nursling an "infant" so using that term in relation to his breastfeeding seems.....odd. It fits better to say that in regards to my 9 month old since I am nursing him and he is JUST beyond infancy. I hope "older nursling" wins out.

Please, please change it Cynthia

I voted Breastfeeding Beyond Infancy. I don't post on this forum a ton but I lurk. I have a 2 year old and have not thought of him as an infant for quite some time.

I have always disliked the word "nursling", so maybe that explains my vote. Don't know why, just sounds strange to me despite having heard and read it hundreds of times. Always reminds me of "gosling" or "duckling" for some odd reason.

Also "older" to me implies beyond 3 or so (only to my mind, I'm sure other mamas may not see it that way), whereas "beyond infancy" pretty much includes everybody age 1 and up.

me too!
I would just like to clarify, in case there's any confusion. "Infant" does not mean "newborn." A newborn is a baby younger than approx. one month. An infant is a baby who is younger than a toddler: younger than approx. one year. This forum would be called 'breastfeeding BEYOND infancy,' not 'breastfeeding your infant.' In other words (if that choice wins), the name of the forum would mean, "breastfeeding your TODDLER-AGED OR OLDER child: your child who is older than approx. one year."

The Child-led weaning thread in this forum used to be called something like "this thread is dedicated to mothers who are breastfeeding OLDER children (support only)," and the thread was basically for mothers breastfeeding children who are approx. three years old and older. So when I hear "breastfeeding your older nursling," I think of that.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I agree with slightly crunchy. I, myself, voted for Breastfeeding Beyond Infancy. For me, it more clearly defines what this forum has been used for: breastfeeding children who are older than approx. one year. The Older Nursling makes me think of children who are older than approx. three years.

I hope it's ethical for me to share this viewpoint, even though I'm the thread starter.

I also hope everyone supports whichever name gets more votes, because I REALLY want to see the word "extended" go, and I don't think I'm alone!

By the way, as many of you know, the name I really wanted was "Sustained Breastfeeding." I don't have any particular attachment or passion or loyalty to either of the choices. May the majority rule!

Carry on...

I voted 'breastfeeding beyond infancy' but it wasnt an easy choice.

To be honest they sound like two different forums rather than 2 names for the same one. 'Breastfeeding beyond infancy' makes me think of older babies and young toddlers, say 9mo to 2-3yrs whereas 'Breastfeeding the older nursling' makes me think of older toddlers and pre-schoolers.

Maybe 2 new forums would be better than renaming the existing forum?

Just a thought..........
Thinking more, I wish I could change my vote. I'm hoping for a CLW forum,, so beyond infancy would be better I think!
I voted for Breastfeeding Beyond Infancy. I feel it is a more inclusive term, since all children from 1 year to 5 years or longer are "beyond infancy." Breastfeeding the Older Nursling has a slightly negative or even defensive sound to it, to me. Older than what? When everyone else thinks the child should have weaned? Do you see what I mean, or is it just me?

I realize that, I just meant that is what *I* think of when I hear it
