Breast feeding and weight loss

675 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  It's me!
Hey ladies.
I read somewhere that trying to lose weight during breastfeedingf can actully hurt baby by releasing some kind of fat chemical or something into the breastmilk? I can't remeber where I read it , but I just remebered today that I did in fact read that somewhere. Thoughts?
I would like to lose most of the baby weight by summer, but not sure if I should activly do that or not.

I can only tell you my experience. When I had dd, I had gained 50 lbs. in preg. (and was a bit overweight before preg.). I lost 20 of that with doing nothing but nursing. Then (after a few months) I decided to start weight watchers. I chose them because it's a balanced diet, if you follow all the rules and they have a special "breastfeeding" program. I think the danger is if you try to diet like you regularly would and you don't get enough calories to support breastfeeding, you also don't want to go on say a low carb type thing because of the quick fat burn that releases keytones (sp?). Anyway, the weight watchers is the same diet, but you get more calories if you are nursing than you would if you weren't. (it's based on the weight you start out, how much you get to eat and then you add to that if you are nursing). I lost the other 30 lbs. this way with number 2 and she didn't suffer and it didn't pour off of me either...it was slow, but good. Just try to do it balanced and don't lose to much at once. That's MY opinion anyway.

Maybe you are thinking about ketones? I'm doing WW, too. It's slow, but not so slow that you give up.
Hmmmm, dunno, but I had trouble keeping my weight up with Dd2 & went well under my normal weiht for a looooong time. I'm 5'9 & always 120 lbs & I was down to 110 lbs
, this time I'm eating so much protein & high good fat stuff like avocadoes & nuts to try to prevent it.

Perhaps you are thinking of a detox when heavy metals & other nasty stuff are excreted from your body?? Can "excreted" mean "getting rid of" in other ways besides pooping?

yep its ketones I heard about. and WW was the plan I was thinking of following. How much more calories on top of the orginial "plan" do you have to eat. Or how many points really?

Well, it's been about 4 yrs. for me, but I THINK it added 10 points to your point range. It was a good amount for me. In fact, I had no trouble staying with the diet with those extra points, I really felt satisfied, but when I had to reduce the points later becuase I was no longer breastfeeding, it felt sacrificial! LOL

I had actually joined WW before I got pg., lost a little, but pretty much got pg. right after. After baby, I just followed the plan (because I had everything, except MONEY) and I did just fine on my own...in fact I think I did better than when I was going to meetings. I eat when depressed and spending that money every week depressed me! LOL So you could just join, get the stuff you need and then quit going and do it on your own. They charge enough up front that they still get paid for what you get. I still think it's one of the best programs out there and isn't hard once you get into the swing of it.

GOOD LUCK!
