Breast milk drying up

828 Views 12 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Ruthla
I think my breast milk might be drying up (have not been nursing or pumping due to a heavily demanding schedule). I do get *some* milk when I apply pressure to my breasts, but nothing but a few drops. Is it too late for me to get back on track with nursing or is all hope gone forever?

It's not too late. How old is the baby? Take 3 days and go to bed and nurse nurse nurse. Get rid of any bottles. Get rid of any other sucking (sippy cups, pacifiers)

good luck!

I am not the right person to anwer but I can tell you there are other women on this forum who will give you great advise to you have come to the right place. I have heard of relactation so just keep at it but you will get better advise anytime now!
I agree with Angela, take a few days and nurse, nurse, nurse! Your milk should come back quicker than you think! Make sure you offer both breasts during each feeding until you get your supply back.

Don't get frustrated mama! Just think about all of the good things that will come from nursing. Get a magazine, newspaper, turn on the tv, or find another way to entertain yourself while you are nursing. It's going to be a long weekend.
Here's some good info on diagnosing and fixing a low supply:

How old is your babe?
It is *very* possible for you to begin nursing again! I started relactating when my babe was 3 months and only had drops of milk. Now he's 5 months old and I'm providing about 40 percent of his nutrition daily...and the total keeps growing weekly.

Nursing at every opportunity is the best thing. Will your babe take the breast? You can also pump every 2 hours, though nursing will work best for your supply. I would *not* just throw out all the bottles! Chances are you don't have enough milk right now to provide all of your babe's nutrition and you don't want to starve the poor thing.
Offer the breast first, then follow with the bottle - or even better, use a lact-aid or an SNS so that your babe stimulates your breast and gets the supplement they need at the same time.

Make sure to drink at least 32 oz. of water daily, eat well, sleep well, and if you're interested in herbal/medical helps, you can try fenegreek capsules or dom. Hope this helps!

Drink lots of water and just nurse as much as possible. Lowering your stress level will help to
How old is baby? How much are you/were you nursing and pumping?

I would nurse nurse nurse....take fenugreek or goats rue and dont look at how much you can pump out..not a good indicator of how much milk you have. Would love more info..to help more.

Two really awesome items that helped increase my milk supply fast:

1. More Milk Two (for use when nursing and pregger) from Motherlove Herbal Company. They have one for if you are not pregger but just nursing

2. Black Seed (capsule form and NOT for use during pregnancy, just nursing)

Both work really great for me! Check out your local health food store or for the first go to www.motherlove.com

Best of luck!

Organic Mother's Milk Tea by Traditional Medicinals is amazing. It worked really well for me. You should be able to find it at most health food stores!
Just wanted to mention that you need to keep a careful watch on wet and dirty diaper count and weight gain if you are going to quit the supplements cold turkey...

Did you think about supplementing with formula at the breast until your supply is reestablished? Baby will get back into the groove of nursing while being rewarded for his/her efforts. And any time baby spends at the breast will contribute to your supply. Look into the Supplemental Nursing System (SNS) http://www.medela.com/NewFiles/specialtyfdg.html or something similar. You can even make your own with some medical tubing and a bottle with a hole cut in the nipple.

Feel free to ask questions if you're considering this method. I'd be happy to offer more info.
Risen_Joy, could you possibly provide more info on black seed? In my research I've only ever heard of fenugreek and blessed thistle recommended to increase supply.

Thank you!

Yes, it's definitely not too late to relactate if you can still express something! You may not be able to regain a full supply, but you can certainly nurture your child at your breast and provide the antibodies in your milk. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
