My little one has been sucking on his thumb every once in a while lately. He's 6 months old and exclusively breastfed. He has two teeth and I think he's working on a couple more. I'm not too terribly concerned because he doesn't do it all the time--usually when he's in his carseat and falling asleep. I keep hearing about people who let their kids suck their thumbs and how it ruined their teeth. Does this have any validity?

Not sure but I'm already resigned to the fact that my lo will need braces just based on how mine and dh's teeth were. Even if that wasn't the case I wouldn't deter my lo from sucking her thumb. She seems to enjoy it and it gives her comfort. It's also a lot of fun to watch her try to figure out how to get a nipple and a thumb in her mouth at the same time.

I don't have issues with DS yet. He nursed for almost 3 years and has sucked on two fingers since he was 4 months(all still does). he is now 5 years. So far the dentist has not been concerned, even knowing he sucks his fingers.Especially since we are dealing with baby teeth. The way I look at is I can't break his habit so we'll just deal with it! Good luck!

I have heard yes and no on the teeth so I'm no help But my 7 year old sucks her thumb a lot and I wish she didn't. it's not very sanitary and she drives me nuts talking with her thumb in when she's tired (we don't let her but she still does sometimes....) DS started to look like he was going to so we tried a pacifier. fortunately it worked so we have avoided the thumb so far. If it were me I would discourage while I still could.

I sucked my thumb until I was 13 years old. I did have the best teeth of my family, I needed no braces. Sometimes I think that it is an old wives tale. I am sure that in some cases the thumb sucker needed braces, but who knows if they would have needed them even if they didn't suck their thumb.

that's a good point. I didn't suck my thumb (or anything) and I needed braces

My DS does the same thing! It's so cute. I alway gently pull his hand away, and then slooooowly it creeps back to his mouth.
