Oh I am sooo angry! I was visiting a friend of mine at the hospital that just had a baby, I just happend to be there when one of the nurses came in and asked her if she was planning on breastfeeding? My friend said yes so the nurse handed her one of the two bags she was holding and said ok this is the breastfeeding bag. So after she left we looked in it... yep it had a can of FORMULA in it!! and and ice pack.. nice breastfeeding bag...

I got one of those with my oldest daughter. I looked in it and said to the nurse "Excuse me, I wanted the BREASTFEEDING bag." She told me that's what I had, and then she offered to take the formula away. I said "Yes please. You can give it to a mama who is having troubles." I was pleasantly surprised when she said they weren't allowed to do that, but that they donate them to animal shelters instead.

My bag had little bottles of formula in it. I gave them to the nurse to share with another mom. I kept the bag because it is nice. Then I got home and got two big cans of powdered formula in the mail. They are going to the food pantry at church. It's unbelievable how much of this junk they give away.

The two cans of free formula came with a little booklet for breastfeeding moms. I counted fifteen out of 39 pages that were dedicated to formula. I asked dh how they can call this a breastfeeding guide??? That makes me even more angry than the free formula. Why on earth would they really need to do this??

How can that *possibly* be a positive breastfeeding bag? Personally I think that sticking a can of formula in there is tantamount to saying 'you won't really be able to do this anyway, so you're going to need this'

what else was in there? any contact info for LC's or LLL? Lanolin? Breast pads? Some really really positive bf'ing info? or a bunch of other things sponsored by major formucorps?

That makes me absolutely

I got one. At the hospital where I delivered - and then recently at an activity for moms and babies (that I didn't realize was sponsored by Emfamil.)

It was labeled "breastfeeding support package". Huge can of powdered formula.

It also includes a detailed pamphlet on how to breastfeed (cleverly filled with not helpful advice and lots of mentions of how very difficult it is and all the problems that you'll encounter) and some huge multi-vitamins for new and/or nursing moms. Because your diet is very important if you nurse - don't you know. (Not so) subtle reminder that you'll be on a strict diet if you breastfeed and you just went through all that with pregnancy - hey, aren't you sick of watching what you eat and being careful with nutrition? and oh, here's a can of formula.

Very sly marketing - but easy to read between the lines.

My SIL had a baby last Saturday at 28 weeks gestation. Baby weighed in at 1lb. 8oz. Yesterday she told me Enfamil gave her a really cool bag. It has TONS of insulated pockets and what not for lugging her pumped milk back and forth to the hospital. I asked her if there was formula in it. Yup, sure was. So there even trying to get little tiny babies on that crap when what they really need is good ol' mama milk. Thank God my MIL is the original lactivist and the entire family has heard over and over how formula companies try to make breastfeeding mamas fail. If we weren't in this family, I could easily see SIL just giving formula to save herself the trouble of pumping every 2 hours.

I've heard that the FFing bags at the hospital have LESS formula than the breastfeeding bags do because forumula feeding moms are already sold on the formula...it's the breastfeeding mama's they need to snag.

I'm not sure if it's all of Canada, but I know at the hospital here, they do not and will not give formula samples.

I got a breastfeeding bag that had no formula in it. I don't see why they don't think it's a good idea to take the formula out. I left the hospital with absolutely no formula and no one ever offered to feed my baby formula... I don't understand what the problem is with other places!

that's just creepy!
: the "BFing" bag I got with DS had a LLL sponsored book on BFing (can't remember the name, but it wasn't bad) and cool gel packs to keep BM cold- and lansinoh samples, and some avent breast pads. so, all in all, mine was pretty good- I'm trying to remember if there was formula in there...i actually don't think there was, but i got tons of the crap mailed to me
: so I don't think you can really win

Do more women at hospitals get formula mailed to them? I'm jw if maybe the hospitals give your info out to the companies or something. I birthed my son at a freestanding birth center and of course I wasn't sent home with any formula and I never got any in the mail.

Apparently Target sells its baby registry names too. It's the only place (other than the hospital) that I was even a blip ... I didn't get any baby/parenting magazines, took my birth class via the hospital, never went to a baby fair or anything. Someone told me Target sells names though ... I suppose that other places might as well (Walmart or BabiesRUs or wherever else a mom might register).

I got literally boxes of formula (four cans per box) more than once. We donated it to a food bank.

Our "bf success" bag at the hospital had a can of formula in it, a bunch of "bf" formula propoganda (the typical stuff - all about the struggles of bf and "bf is best but if you use formula" with the peaceful/happy/totally together married mom pics on those pages (vs the single, ringless, nude mom on the other pages - talk about subliminal! Wow)).... Four ice packs (I use these in our coolers
) .... I think there were free samples and coupons for breast pads (disposable so I didn't get them), also for Balmex and Desitin and some baby shampoos etc.... Most of my bag was thrown away. I only took it because a friend had told me how nice those bags were to keep stocked in the vehicle in case you forgot the diaper bag when you were out (we only had to use our formulabag's diaper/clothing stash once but I'll keep using it with this next baby, as I imagine things will only get more hectic).

I think this time around, I will simply leave the bag in the room. It's my understanding that the hospitals get kickbacks every time that the bag is taken?? And therefore, whether I'm giving it to a shelter or anywhere else, I'm ratifying the system. So it's just not going to go. I've heard of some moms just pouring the formula down the sink and leaving it. I don't think I'd go that far ....

I wish there were an LLL group here or etc. It would be really nice to get a Babyfriendly hospital status here .... There's a town of a similar size in MT (Anaconda) which has a babyfriendly hospital, and if they can do it, it seems that this town ought to be able to, as well. But, without some very organized and vocal bf support/advocacy groups in place and well-established, I doubt it would go too far in terms of pushing for it. My OB says he thinks the initiation rate here is 90% or so .... but I don't think our actual bf rate is any higher than anywhere else in WY.

Well, I DEFINITELY won't be shopping with Motherhood. I never did (all the stuff I got from them was given to me) and I've heard that their nursing bras are pure crap (probably a ploy to make women think how crappy nursing is or something lol). I also heard that they hand out formula samples at the store.

My bag from motherhood didn't have any formula (may have had a few coupons) but it had desitin, baby lotion (which I used on myself, lol!), nursing pads, and some pamphlets on cord blood donation.
