Hi! In a couple weeks I'm going to San Francisco. My baby is 7 months old and I'm very uncomfortable nursing in public since I get so many negative remarks from relatives. I was wondering if anybody could give me some tips on nursing while traveling or if anybody knows of good places to breastfeed while we're out in San Fran. Thanks in advance!

have not bf in sf, but it's such a progressive place and your child is still at an age where people see a baby and not a big kid so i think it'll go really well!

when my ds was that age a challenge with nip was he was so interested in what was going on around him bf often went better if i could find a quiet corner somewhere.

i think slings are nice for bf in public if you can figure out how to make that work 4 u. i just got a solarveil ring sling from www.bohemianmama.com that is really nice when it's hot.

sorry 2 hear u have some relatives who aren't supportive.
: good 4 u for having the confidence to do what you feel is best 4 your baby anyway!

i am taking my 19 mo DS to visit some very conservative Ezzo readin'. bottle feedin' relatives in rural OK in a few days. i wish we were going to sf!!!

have fun!

thanx for the advice! i must be brain dead cuz i never thought about nursing in a sling. i think i'll practice in my snugli before the trip and see how it goes. i'll check out that solarveil too cuz i have a sweaty little baby.

i think you're right about sf-nip there will probably be a lot better there than where i live, it might be good to get away! Good luck on your trip to OK!

The thing about something like a ring sling, which is mostly just a big piece of fabric, is that you can also use it for a little blanket. It never worked for us to put a blanket over the baby's head--too hot and distracting to him. But sometimes I have used it to help cover me up a bit by putting it over my shoulder or so that it is partly covering my belly.

I live in SF and nurse my toddler anytime, anywhere and have never had anyone say anything or give us any weird looks (although I might just be happily oblivious). Breastfeeding doesn't seem to be the norm here as much as I might have thought, but I think you'll be just fine.

And I wouldn't worry about the sweaty little baby - summer isn't exactly warm in SF
As Mark Twain is rumoured to have said, "The coldest winter I ever spent was summer in San Francisco."

I dont think you have the slightest thing to worry about with NIP in SF. I'd eat my hat if you had anyone even look twice. I only ever got smiles and positive comments. I breastfeed wherever and whenever I need to - whatever age my nursling. I
SF!
