hello ladies- I'm hoping that someone can give me some advice- or point me in the right direction to finding out some information.

There is a chance that our family will be going to Dubai inthe UAE for about a year. I'm expecting our 4th baby in about 4-6 weeks and since I'm a hard core lactivist , obviously breastfeeding is the plan!!! BUT i don't know about the UAE and their views of breastfeeding- I realize that it's not so segregated between men and women like Saudi etc.... but I need to find out what the muslim opinions and cultural biases might be!!

So if anyone is living there now- or can give me some advice, i would GREATLY appreciate it- even just an idea of where to look for the info I need!

thanx to all!

I believe Islam encourages women to nurse their babies for two years, at least that's what one of my Muslim friends told me. I hope some of the Muslimahs here will concur!

Good luck on your travels! Dubai looks like a beautiful place!

I've been to Dubai, live in a secular but Muslim-majority country now. Islam is super pro-breastfeeding. It's a child's birthright and a mother's duty. I don't know about nursing in public, but keep in mind that they will have a lot of special rooms for women (women's prayer rooms, for example) where you can go and nurse the baby. I found people in Dubai very accommodating and I'm sure if you want to nurse in a store, you can always ask to use their back room or something.

One note: some of these refs mention BFing in a chador (face covered) with boob out. This is possible because nobody knows whose boob it is. Boob-out face-out might not have the same acceptance. Though, it might, don't know.

Some articles from a quick search... it's looking positive, as expected:

http://www.lalecheleague.org/NB/NBSepOct02p170.html (you can always go to LLL for answers! )
http://www.lalecheleague.org/llleade...nJul05p60.html
http://www.mothering.com/discussions.../t-607935.html (MDC archive about Oman which is more conservative than UAE)

Oooh- and look at this- a BF support group for Dubai moms:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/breastfeedingqa/

Good luck mom!
