I gave birth on May 19th to my little girl. I've lost about 40 pounds since then. I also exclusively breastfeed. She nurses about every 1 and a half or 2 or 3 hours. And at night, she always rustles around to night-nurse frequently as well.

Is this normal?? I mean, losing weight so fast? I already fit back into my pre pregnancy clothing and even they seem a little loose!!

I know breastfeeding makes you lose weight, but I'm losing A LOT of weight, incredibly fast.

Have any of you mommas lost a lot of weight with breastfeeding?

Sounds like what happened for me.

I only gained 27 pounds with my PG, and I lost 22 of it within about 3 days PP. Definitely within the first week. I'm now 12 pounds below my pre-PG weight, and have been since about 3 months PP.

My pre-PG pants have fit since I went back to work at 7 weeks PP, but my old shoes, though I am back to my pre-PG size, don't fit right at all.

I definitely believe BFing has helped my weight loss.

I gave birth in May as well and had lost 35lbs by 3 weeks post-partum and now at 6 weeks have lost about 45 lbs. It has slowed down somewhat though, so I don't feel like I'm going to waste away to nothing or anything like that!

I only gained 21 lbs with this pregnancy...

My baby is now 17 days old and not only have I dropped all 21 "extra" lbs, but I'm 5 lbs lighter than I was BEFORE I got pregnant.

It struck me as weird, too. Babe is just over 2 weeks old and already I'm in my pre-pregnancy clothes...this has NEVER happened before (with my other two kids)...and the only difference is that I'm breastfeeding this baby, and never did with my older two.

Yup normal.

I was 10 lbs below my pre-pregnancy weight when DD was a week old.

I am now 30 lbs below my pre-pregnancy weight and have for the first time since she was born actually seen weight gain over this crazy vacation we took.

DD is 9 months old.

Not common, but normal. You also have to take into consideration that a lot of the weight you gain while pregnant isn't fat but other things, like baby, amniotic fluid, placenta, etc. I dropped 40lbs within a week after giving birth to my first; most of that was either pregnancy matter or retained fluid.

Wow, these are some big loses! I lost about 20 lbs in the first few weeks but tried to stay away from the scale for awhile after that. At 13 months I'm about 10 lbs under my prepregancy weight. Just one word of caution - rapid weight loss can contribute to low supply. Just keep up your calories and liquids, rest as needed, and you should be fine.

I've been trying to keep my calorie intake up but these days when baby does nothing but nurse all day it's tough to keep up! I'm in the process of baking some oatmeal cookies to snack on since DD is finally taking a nap

I lost a huge amount, too... and I really couldn't afford to lose it.

I get comments in stores and even my MIL said to me, "You know, you could stand to put on 5 or 10 pounds."

Yeah... i get you, I'm too skinny. *sigh*

But it's fair, I guess, because let's put it this way... my pants are literally sagging off of me. I need to get a belt soon, because they almost fall off (and probably would if I didn't keep pulling them up every few minutes).

I was standing there in the healthfood store reading a label and I overheard a discussion about how excessively skinny I am now. Fortunately, the woman was talking to a clerk that I know, who stood up for me. But it was somewhat hurtful.

You're lucky mama! I lost weight el pronto w/older DC, but this time around I am a little older and fatter.
I gained 45lbs this time around and I need to lose 13 more. W/older DC, I only gained 25lb and lost by 2 wks pp.

Nope, I didn't lose it that easily....until 10 months later, when I became a hyperthyroid. Which is NOT to say that is what happened to you...I am hoping I can lose this round of baby weight through BF'ing.....instead of through a faulty thyroid! Congrats!

Thank you for all the replies! I don't feel so weird now. :p

I really am liking the weight loss because I am a fluffy mom to begin with. I weigh like 200lbs right now, so we'll see about losing more. I'm really excited. Once I get the okay from my doctor, I'm going ot be working out.

I lost my pregnancy weight within 2 weeks, and lost another 25lbs from there. I'm currently 5'8" and 111 pounds. As a PP said, it's not common, but weight loss is normal. I get lots of comments about how thin I am. I feel healthy and am not tired (well.. no more than other mothers of toddlers!) so I suspect I'm just burning more calories than I am taking in - or since my weight has stabilized, I'm in equilibrium at the moment.

However, my Reproductive Endocrinologist (I'm starting an IVF cycle in the next few months) is not so thrilled with the loss, and has just sent me for a thyroid check. He is coming from the viewpoint of sustaining a pregnancy, of course, so he is going to be conservative, but it's not a bad idea... I've been thinking of requesting one for a while - "just in case"

I drink A LOT of water. I can't get enough of it!! We buy the 24 packs of bottled water from Wal Mart because the tap water here is really gross. And we go through one of those in a few days. I just seriously love pure water with nothing in it. Breastfeeding makes you thirsty, right? Hehe.

And I eat really healthy. I eat lots of fruit and vegetables and whole grains. I've cut out a lot of fake sugar from my diet because it's not so good for you [high fructose corn syrup] and I prefer the natural sugar in fruits. I want my breastmilk to be perfect for my little one and if that means sacrificing what I like, that's fine.

I do walk a lot too.

I think at my 6 week check up, I'll ask about that though and see if they will run a test.
