I always read stories about NIP and public comments...and now I have my own. I took my ds (7 weeks) and dd (2.5) to the pediatrician's office today. My daughter sat nicely and looked at books, while I nursed my son in the waiting room. Within 5 minutes, an older nurse came to my side and asked me to go to a back room to nurse, "because there will be some teenage boys coming in for checkups." I was SO STUNNED that I just stared at this woman. Then I told her, "No, I am quite comfortable right here." She began to make an issue of it. I told her flatly that I wasn't moving. She left me alone.
The irony: I was sitting right underneath a bookshelf that had about 10 breastfeeding books on it...and a sign that read "Breastfeeding Welcome."
Now...here is my rant and rave...
Should the first experience teenage boys have with breasts be sexual...if it is...shouldn't they at least know what real breasts are for?

I would have said "Don't worry. If they hurry up and get here, I should have enough to go around."

Here's a question. Would you rather see that person fired...or educated?

I would rather that the doctor talk to the nurse about why what she did was wrong and how she needed to change her mannerisms toward the patients.

But then if it happens again, can her sorry arse.

fired. A nurse that works with babies has no right to be uneducated on such an important issue especially when the information that she needs to be educated is not hard to fine.

And since this doctor obviously doesn't care enough about breastfeeding to educate his staff or make sure they are educated, I would except no advice from him/her.

Definitely complain! But really, I would not bring up anything comparing seeing a woman breastfeeding to seeing a porn movie. It's only going to reinforce the whole "breastfeeding is sexual" misconception.

Thanks for all of your support...

I am currently writing a letter of complaint to the office. I love my pediatrician (who is extremely pro-breastfeeding) --as is the whole practice. This old nurse must be the one rotten apple. The next time it happens, I will not only stay and nurse, but I will also cause a scene in a very dignified manner. It's such a shame that she isn't educated, especially for all of the new moms who go there. While her comment offended me, it didn't discourage me from NIP...(I do it everywhere). However, it might have discouraged a new mom from nursing...I will DEFINITELY include that in my letter.
