Okay, after lots of research and soul searching and looking at lots and lots and lots of pictures, the English Mastiff won out over the Great Dane (but if I could have Joanna's Mitch, I'd change my mind ) and I'm looking at breeders. There is a male puppy available very close to where I am (a day's drive, compared to having to have the puppy shipped via plane) with a good pedigree (sire and dam are not champions, but I'm okay with that- there are champs on both sides in close past) BUT sire and dam are not OFA cert'd and no other genetic testing has been done. Sire is 18Mos, Dam is 2. Ugh. I know I shouldn't even consider this puppy. The only thing they are willing to contract about is hip dysplasia- it's written into the contract that if the dog is dysplastic by 25mos, they will replace the dog, refund half of purchase price if I decide to neuter and keep him, at my discretion. No mention of patellas, elbows, Cystinuria, or the plethora of eye disorders that plague Mastiffs. If someone is willing to look at the sales contract, will you let me know? And tell me I'm an idiot for thinking about buying this puppy. He's awful cute, but I know better than this *sigh*

Sure, PM me the website or contract and I'll look. However, I'd advise you to start by contacting a breeder you know is good, even if they're far away, and asking for referrals to a breeder who is close to you. I can recommend Cape Wind Mastiffs in MA very highly (Geri is actually a member here, though I don't know if she's currently active) and she can get you started.

I dont have alot of time but real quick... Dont let puppy fever cloud your judgement. I think you know you should not get this puppy, you wouldnt be here asking if you were confident in your descision to get him. Contracts are only as good as the people behind them, they are not doing other things the right way what makes you think when your dog turns up dysplastic they willl honor the contract?

okay, temporary insanity is gone i've scratched that puppy from my list. the breeder didn't want to interview me at all- said that my asking questions was enough to convince her that i would be a good home for her puppy : i have another puppy i'm looking at though (i HATE pedigrees, btw), even though it's further away and we'll have to ship. thanks for the logic, ladies. i appreciate it! it's easy to look into those little puppy eyes and get stupid for a moment

Definitely contact Joanna's contact at Cape Wind, you never know, she could have someone she's mentored close to you or even just know of a good litter coming up in your area. I could presently tell you about 3 excellent litters in other provinces that you would be unlikely to find unless you knew someone who knows someone--kwim?

This breeder was really surprised that I kept emailing back with more questions- all she wanted to tell me about was the size. It's kind of a given- Mastiffs bred to AKC standard are big, that's sorta a given, but this breeder seemed to think that the only thing I was interested in as a potential buyer was total poundage of dog. Ugh. I asked her what info. she required of me, such as family info, house/yard size, vet references, age of my kids, etc. and she said, "Oh, I'm sure you'll be a good owner since you ask so many questions" : I could have been a freaking puppy mill rep. for all she knew.
