Help a new mama out!

Lana (5.5 wks) tends to spit up a lot, and it inevitably spills down her neck into her little neck rolls. I am pretty good about cleaning it all out, but I'm not sure if I missed some or if this is something else. She has a bright red, kind of wet rash in one of her neck rolls. I just noticed it and cleaned it with some warm soapy water, then put some baby powder on it to dry it up. Not to be gross, but it smells kind of foul, not like the normal breastmilk cheesey smell. Should I be worried? Does this sound like an infection??

I'd hate to bring her into the Dr's for nothing, but I'm worried it's some sort of infection. Help!

Sounds like maybe some yeast going on there. The baby powder may be making things worse b/c yeast in diaper areas live off cornstarch powder. It's food to them.

I would just keep patting it try after feeds, make sure you get it with baby wash soap during baths, and use a clean wipe on it every diaper change, when she will be lying down anyway and her neck will be more accessible.

If it doesn't go away in a few days or starts to look worse, try some yeast cream that is for women's yeast infections.

Oh, I didn't even think of yeast...yeah, that makes sense. I just bathed her to get the powder out, patted it dry, and I'm going to leave it be for a little while.

That's not super serious, right?

My dfs gets this a lot too. He is a reflux baby, and also sort of big, and I think the spit up just rubs in his neck folds so that it becomes almost like a heat rash. I do try to wipe up his spit up, but now that he drools a lot too, it is almost impossible to keep him totally dry all the time. In the last couple days its been looking a little raw, so I rubbed some herbal "Miracle Salve" on it, which seemed to help. I also considered putting diaper rash cream on it last night .

Between this and the hard white spot thread, it seems our babies are going through some strange things!

My girl has the same thing..I always just figured it was b/c her neck never sees the light of day because she is so chubby. I clean it whenever I can and make sure to wash it out during every bathtime.

I just noticed the same things on ds today. My dd had it too. I called the docks office about it and I can't remember what they told me to do? That was just last year too, I should remember. But anyway, my kids are chubba's and they have no neck, just fat rolls SO I thought it was yeast too. When I washed ds's it got worse? More inflamed. I think the washcloth irritated it? I'm going to call tomorrow and see what it was they told me to do b/c I never used anything medicated with dd and she had this all the time until she grew a neck

My dd used to get this and it smelled really like sour milk.
It was red and bright and shiny but had no spots.
Powder worked really well for us.
Another suggestion is keeping the crease clean and putting some vaseline on it to form a wetness barrier for any leaked milk throughout the day.
It didnt take long for my dd's neck to get raw from the milk either and I seemed to always be cleaning it out. SOme babies just have more folds than others.
Dd gets this too sometimes in the darling folds of her neck and I use Sweet Almond oil from the health food store on it. I put it on at every diaper cahnge and after her bath and it clears up in a few days! HTH!
