Radio station WIOD, AM 610, has been the official channel for emergency information from Broward County government for the past year. The County Commission, all Democrats, balked at renewing the deal Tuesday, unable to stomach the station also being home to Limbaugh's talk show.

I think this is good. If the only station where you can get hurricane information plays Limbaugh and other similar shows, then people are forced to listen to that stuff if they want to keep up with the weather. Why not find a more neutral station, maybe a music station, to be the source of storm information?
When I lived in an area with dangerous storms, I always had on a station that had storm warnings in the bakground, but if it meant having to have that stuff in my house, I would have taken my chances.

Really? You would take risks with your safety because you don't like the politics of the stations the storm warning air on?

This station was chosen on the strength of the signal; that would be most important to me.

Personally, I wouldn't care which station had the info... as long as everybody knew where to turn for that info. And, I hate Rush with a passion.

"They are politicizing the delivery of emergency news, which is non-partisan," said Limbaugh, who lives in Palm Beach. "They are making weather a partisan issue."
For once I have to agree with Rush.

But Commissioner John Rodstrom, a one-time young Republican leader who later became a Democrat, said the county should not politicize emergency management.

Judy Sarver, the county's public communications director, said WFTL and WLRN also offered to take on the role, but that she and other emergency planners preferred WIOD because of its signal strength(one good reason to stick with them) ,numerous FM sister stations (second good reason to keep them) and willingness to give Broward top play(Third good reason).
This is about providing a service if those other stations cannot provide those three things then they should loose out. This station has the capability to interrupt several local AM and FM stations and join them in case of an emergency. I bet some of those FM stations are more liberal venues. These people are putting political views before peoples safety.

I also think it hits me wrong because of freedom of speech.

Absolutely. If this station hs the best signal that has a chance of reaching even the crappiest of transistor radios then it is the right choice for the broadcasts. The point is reaching as many people as possible not being concerned as to who else might be on the station.

If I jsut turned the station on when I knew a storm was coming, maybe it wouldn't matter. But, I just kept the station on all summer long, every day, to hear about upcoming storms. It would have driven me nuts if I had Rush on in my house every day. In that case, I would have just bought a scanner.

This radio station has sister station. This means its main station (most likely the AM one) can interrupt the rest of the stations in an emergancy. So you aren't force to listen to that one.

Yeah...that's what we get on our scanner now...I think it picks up the weather service.

If there are other options besides listening to Rush to get weather info, then I don't have a problem with it. At least where I lived, all radio stations that had 'live dj's' or at least a local office broadcast the weather and all warnings.
I would just have a problem with something where the only way you could easily get weather warnings was to listen to a station that plays Rush.
