Bunk Bed?

Hi there, my DS is 25 months now, and we are execting #2 in august (another little boy
. DS has co-slept with us up till now, but we would like to try and transition him into his own 'big boy bed' before little one #2 arrives.

As such, I've been planning on finding him a twin bed, but have recently decided that a better long-term investment would probably be bunk beds. *OUR* bed is currently just two old twin mattresses pushed together (which makes like, a king-size bed
. Our plan is thus to buy us a new mattress/bed and give DS the old twin mattress(es). Am I nutty to think about putting my 2 yr old DS in a bunk bed (on the bottom bunk, obviously)??

I don't think so. Actually most of the nicer ones come apart, so you could just put together the bottom half like a twin bed and wait until he's older to give him the top bunk. Get one that the ladder comes off too.
I bought a bunk bed the day before I had my second. My first was 3. it seemed like a good investment at the time, but we only stacked them a few months ago and the top bunk broke a couple of weeks ago. Luckily, no one was hurt. I've never been a fan of bunk beds for this reason (and other dangers, like falling/jumping off the top, my younger DS had seizure at the top of the ladder. Luckily I saw him before he fell). Now they have a twin and a mattress on the floor. I like this arrangement MUCH better.
Will you be able to block off the top bunk/ladder? I believe 6yr is the minimum age for being on a top bunk. IF I were buying them I would look for twins that stack rather than one unit.

that sounds good to me too.

what we did was put a futon mattress on the floor for dd in her room (she was 23 mos when our ds was born) and my dh slept in there with her for a while.

eventually he came back to our bed. and shortly after dd wanted to come back into the family bed so we put a crib mattress on the floor next to our bed, which worked really well for a good long time.

now (mercifully!!) both of my kids sleep in their own beds - twin mattresses on the floor.

good luck with whatever you decide (and with your new little one)!!!

My ds has had http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20102451
bed since he was around 18 months, can't remember exactly. He is almost 3 now. It has different set ups but we do the one where the mattress is on the floor for him. And it is in his room with the ladder in the corner/against the wall. The only negative is that the top bunk draws clutter.

We have this bed, but without the bottom bed on it. DSD has been sleeping in the lofted part since she was almost 4 and we've had no problems. Once the new baby is ready for the crib (at least a year from now, I am guessing), we'll add the bottom bunk and move DS (who will be 3) into that.
