we are in the process of getting our fostering license and are having a home safety inspection next week. I know that we are not allowed to have bunk beds for the kids (they are 4 and 2), and DD and DS sleep in what is technically a low loft bed with a mattress on the ground. This is it:

and THIS is what it looks like without the bottom mattress.

The beds total height, not including the tent, is 45 5/8". It is very low - I can look down on DS in the top if the tent is off.

Do you think that the inspector will consider this a bunk bed still?

I'm assuming they mean no bunk beds for foster children, not your own children. But if they do, I'm pretty sure that the top would still be considered a bunk even if it's off the floor. A child could, theoretically fall off the top level (even if it's low) and there's no safety surfacing under it.

When I asked about beds for foster kids they told me that the bunk bed requirements had to do with having a separate space for each child, not about fall risks. If that's true I'd think you could have a loft but not a kid sleeping under a loft.

Of course that was many years ago and in my jurisdiction so it doesn't guarantee that it would apply to you.

Requirements vary by state. I know of one that says a child must be over 6 to be on the top bunk, one that says no bunk beds for fosters (no mention of bios or lofts), and one that says none, never. My current state says no mattress on the floor. Ours is not to understand the rules, just follow them...

I dont think my state has any regs. regarding bunks, lofts, mattresses, etc other than talking about required bedding, etc.

Totally not helpful, just wanted to add that my 2 little girls both have that rainbow stripped/polka dot bedding set and I think it is super cute

I also like that loft and will look into getting something like my girls in the next few years when they have to share a room (they'll be too small for bunks--they're 3 and 1 now). We'll be adopting a little boy, so he is lucky and gets the other room all to himself...(unless we go for sibs)
