I was wondering if you guys buy hay by the bale or just buy the small bags from oxbow/petsmart/feedstore. I have a source of bermuda grass hay bales at $8/bale wwhich is MUCH cheaper than what i pay now which is $4 for 24 oz. of hay. But i have no idea how or where i would store it so it wouldnt go bad before my bunny used it all. Any suggestions?

I buy my timothy hay from a feed store. It's cheaper and fresher. The hay at petstores and supermarket look unappetizing. I buy a very large bag of hay for $4. I don't have room for a bale and even if I did my bunny wouldn't eat all the hay in a bale. I'd be throwing money away.

To store it you would need someplace dry and not too hot. You could always store it in individual flakes--if I remember correctly, most hay bales come with say 10 flakes of hay. The quality probably wouldn't be *quite* as high as Oxbow, but as good as or better than just basic pet store hay.

A hay bale comes with flakes, they're sections of the bale--done by the bailer, you can't miss them because dividing the bale by anything other than flakes is hard. When you cut the twine it sort of falls off to flakes, you would then pull out as much hay as you need out of an individual flake.
