Suddenly this week my son starting not wanting to get on the morning bus. This is a kid who normally loves the bus so I started asking him ?'s. He said that a kid was copying him and laughing at everything he does, even when he just looks out the window. He said he has told him to stop but it doesn't work, the kid just laughs. My son is in K and sits right behind the driver so I was puzzled as to how this could continue unnoticed. DS said the kid's name was "G_____" so I tried looking him up in the student directory, but no kids with that name. Then DS says the kid doesn't get off the bus at school.
hat is a kid doing riding the bus who doesn't go to the school?! I followed up at his school and they were also puzzled but said they would check into it (in my follow up with the school they told me a second child has also complained about this kid). But in the meantime my DS refused to get on the bus. I am figuring this kid is probably the bus driver's kid.

So this morning I told my son he needed to ride the bus so he could report to Mr. D at school how this kid G____ behaved. As I was helping my DS onto the bus I see this kid staring out the window and already starting to laugh at my son. He has a rude smirk and is pointing, laughing, and talking to one of the other kids. My momma bear came out and I leaned into the bus and told the driver that a kid named G____ has been teasing my son and other kids. She looked surprised and said, "G___?, he's my son." I said, "Well, I have reported him to the school and I wanted you to know. This behavior is not okay and needs to stop." Then I stepped off the bus.

Do you think I handled it okay or should I have waited for the school to address the issue? I just feel like the school doesn't have much power here because they are not the ones who contract with the bus company (our local school district pays to bus our son to this school in a separate district). What would you have done? My DS said today went fine on the bus and he told Mr. D at school and it is comforting to DS to know he can talk to Mr. D about any issues. I will follow up with the school next week, but not sure if I need to do more.

I think what you did was fine for now. If it starts up again then I suggest contacting the company that has contracted this bus driver out. This kid may not even be allowed on the bus but the driver is doing it anyhow, yk.

I was wondering about this. I would think it would be a huge liability issue for the bus company. What if he hurt another kid or he got hurt? I hate to get someone in trouble if she has no other options, but then she should be keeping her kid on a tight rein and fly under the radar better.

Ditto the other replies! You brought it to the driver's attention - who is the first in line for safety of the kids on the bus. As it turns out, being that it was the driver's child, you also let them know that you're not just sweeping it under the rug and that there are others who are aware of the situation.

Exactly this is a clear example of when you needed to be a voice for your child and you were. Hopefully the issue will be resolved peacefully.
