OTTAWA (CP) - Protesters clashed with riot police Tuesday afternoon as a crowd tried to move across a bridge to demonstrate against the visit of U.S. President George Bush.

Scuffles broke out as dozens of police in riot gear and gas masks used shields to hold back activists.

The clash occurred outside the posh Chateau Laurier Hotel, where some of the Bush entourage were staying. Protesters were knocked to the ground and at least three people were arrested.

Some threw placards, sticks, pumpkins and water bottles at police. One tactical officer was covered in red paint.

The clashes marred a day of otherwise peaceful protests.

Organizers had encouraged protesters to head to Bush's next venue - the government conference centre - after a peaceful protest on Parliament Hill.

I guess the protesters plan on following GW everywhere he goes. Poor guy. And he can't afford to take any of those dangerous drugs "they could cure you or kill you"........

Any Canadians out there or anyone else care to comment on his visit?

I think it's hilarious that he decided not to go to Parliament cuz he was scared he'd get heckled. sheesh. What kind of an infant are we dealing with here, who can order the slaughter of tens of thousands but cannot stomache a wee bit of critique.

And the protests are still going on as we speak. About 8 000 people converged on Parliament Hill this evening, and planned to follow Bush to his "state dinner" tonight.

It made me feel really great that so many people showed up without alot of advance notice to organize. I think it was an important gesture of solidarity both to the people who voted against Bush in the US, and with people around the world especially those who will be affected by his policies.

SadieSabot: ITA with your post. It's really sick.

He's heading to Halifax tomorrow. The protests are sure to be even more *active* there, so keep posted.

I wish I were able to attend the protests....of course a lot of people I know feel that he's not worth the waste of gas to go  . I'm glad there are so many Canadians doing this.

As a side note, I wonder if he would of bothered to thank Atlantic Canadians for all they did buring the 911 crisis had he not been re-elected...

Tuesday, 30 November 2004

Today in Vancouver, Lawyers Against the War filed torture charges against George W. Bush under the Canadian Criminal Code.

The charges were laid by Gail Davidson, co-chair of Lawyers against the War--LAW, under provisions enacted pursuant to the U.N. Torture Convention, ratified by both Canada and the United States. The charges concern the well known abuses of prisoners held by US Armed Forces in the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba. The charges were accepted by the Justice of the Peace and referred for a hearing to decide whether Bush should be required to appear for trial. The Attorney General of Canada's consent is required within eight days for proceedings to continue, and the question of Bush's diplomatic immunity will have to be resolved by the court.

Bush also cancelled last minute on a recent (important) dinner in Chile, given in Bush's honor nonetheless, b'c they wouldn't place metal detectors at each entrance. He didn't trust Chilean security, so he cancelled the night of the honorable dinner, after everything was already in place, including the guests. how cool.

ooo, sorry, way off topic there!

So Bushy boy is gone and our pm Paul Martin decides he better issue a statement regarding the missle defense issue.

He states that he did not okay the discussion of this topic and that Canada will decide Canada's role in the program based on the needs and values of Canadians and this will be accomplished in Canada's timeline.

Thankfully he is on the fence, in true canadian style, but on the fence never the less. I am so glad he didn't make a deal with the devil.

Bush didn't open the border to our cows though, probably because we won't okay missles in space above our artic. Soft wood issue is still at a crisis level too.

why the heck did bushy boy bother to come, didn't change my opinion of him.
