Bush to Screen Population For Mental Illness

President Bush plans to unveil next month a sweeping mental health initiative that recommends screening for every citizen and promotes the use of expensive antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs favored by supporters of the administration.

This scares me. I don't see mental illness and treatment of mental illness as a government issue. I don't want people screening my children for mental illness - especially when they only profit if they diagnose my child with something. A diagnosis that can follow my child throughout life.

I fully support people with mental illness having access to treatment. Psychiatric hospitals are shutting down, and people with severe mental illness are ending up in jails or on the street. Something needs to be done about this problem. But, this is not the solution. An administration that's sleeping with the pharmaceutical companies cannot be trusted to deal with the current crisis. They certainly can't be trusted around our children!

Okay, only if they start the evaluations with the Oval Office and work their way "down"...

{{{yuck}}}
This plan is crazy!! How can this be?

And wasn't it the beloved Regan who shut down the mental institutions?

I think I will pluck my eyes out! (maybe not, but that's how I feel.)
You'll notice there is no talk of re-opening mental clinics.

The commission said, "Each year, young children are expelled from preschools and childcare facilities for severely disruptive behaviors and emotional disorders."
How about good training about normal childhood behavior instead? It would accomplish the same goal w/a lot less drugs!
I'm so glad the 'small government', 'individual responsibility' Republicans are in the White House.

Exactly what I was thinking..
This really disturbs me.

Anyone have any additional links on this?

Yep, good ol' Ronnie decided to close the doors on a lot of folk who needed help. That was the begining of alot of homelessness in the streets...

Back to the OP - this sounds like a bad parinoid furturistic drama come to life!! After all, if you can keep the public sedated enough -(isn't that what TV's for?) they won't notice you sucking the life out of them...

Makes me think of the old Marxist (or was it Lenin?) saying "Religion is the opiate of the masses" only turned around "Opiates are the religion of the masses"... it's all about control............

What really **IRKS** me is how so many people now expect children to be miniature adults. Whatever happened to playing with your kids instead of having them dosed with some kind of ADD med and zonked out on the couch?!

Please, no offense to those whose children really DO need the meds, I'm just ticked at those weeners like my BIL whose idea of a "good kid" is one so drugged they don't move off the couch from the time they wake up until bedtime. :-/

Mental screening in public schools scares the heck outta me...... Just horrible. The abuse of this could be staggering.
ITA. It seems like there are already plenty of people in public schools ready to "diagnose" the students. I wonder what kind of professionals they envision doing the assessments?
Yeah, and who is going to pay for it? And if the money is public money, does it take away from the school budget?
Hmmm Levi's mom that is a great point! I truly believe Bush is trying to starve social problems to death, this could be just another step.

I also don't see how you could require parents to purchase medication, but that's a long way away (I hope).
Mental Illness is such a subjective disease.

This is a very dangerous thing to be hoisting over us.
Think of all the genius in the past that would have been extinguished with the use of meds.

Perhaps this is actually a ploy to increase support for vouchers. They could do mandatory mental screening in public schools which would send people to private schools and increase voucher support.
I wouldn't put anything past "them" at this point

wtf is this? Is Ashcroft taking over in some sort of Borg like fashion?

Has anyone found any more links? ways to protest and publicize such nonsense?(other than the blanket statement to vote for someone else

Another article - Looks like the original that others are getting their stories from.

I did a Google search. Didn't find anything about this at any "reputable" (i.e. mainstream) news site. Found basically the same article at a number of other sites.
WTF?

Can't believe this will happen or that it's even conceived of. What a load.

But the Texas project, which promotes the use of newer, more expensive antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs, sparked off controversy when Allen Jones, an employee of the Pennsylvania Office of the Inspector General, revealed that key officials with influence over the medication plan in his state received money and perks from drug companies with a stake in the medication algorithm
Ahh, those pharmaceutical lobbyists sure do have deep pockets...
Dh says there are 6 pharm. lobbyists for every Senator, they have a lot of pull.
