'Senior advisors tell NBC News in advance of today's speech that the president will ask for an additional $7 billion in emergency spending for preparedness, including nearly $3 billion to “accelerate the development of cell-culture technology to be able to vaccine every American within 6 months of a pandemic.”'

The frenzy is going to lead to forced vaccination at gunpoint. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/irked.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="irked">:

I haven't read tons on this whole bird flu thing, so forgive me if this is a dumb question or something that has been covered in the news and I've missed it. What are the chances of a bird flu pandemic? It seems that the media and government would have us believe that it is inevitable - only a matter of time.<br><br>
Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this or sources.

I don't know what the chances are, but Bush just made a statement that "we do <b>not</b> have evidence a pandemic is imminent."<br><br>
He also stated that seasonal flu is not dangerous to most people.<br><br>
He urges Congress to pass the liability protection for vaccine makers.<br><br>
New website: pandemicflu.gov<br><br><br>
Here's one thing that's certain -- Pharma execs must be breaking out the champagne right about now. Particularly, Novartis, who will be acquiring Chiron.

They already have this..for most vaccines and this was established during the Reagan administration. Doesn't this just mean to add the bird flu vaccine to it?

Right now, the only vaccines covered are the ones that are on the recommended schedule for children. The new bill will make manufacturers exempt from lawsuits for *all* vaccines, whether they're routinely recommended for children or not.

In essence, however, it would force Americans to receive inoculations against a disease that has yet to kill one of them, while removing their constitutional right to seek redress in our courts in case of injury or death from the shots because of company negligence. The proposal, now moving its way through the Senate, would also ban citizens from using the Freedom of Information Act and other popular informational laws to discover whether the new vaccine (when it is finally produced) was effective and safe, and even whether anyone had suffered adverse reactions to it.</td>

I do this this might be good in the long run.<br><br>
My pro-vax mom and mil both were astond to learn for the first time you just cannot sue the vax companies. My mil remebers the bad polio vaccines of the 1950-60's. She finally realize that if that were to happen again nobody could sue.<br><br>
My mom greatly dislikes the lower accountablity.<br><br>
They both made comments that shocked me.
