Okay, I am driving myself crazy with trying to find a decent sewing machine and thought others might be doing the same. LOL. I thought I'd try and gather most of the advice threads for buying a sewing machine. I plan to skim through them all after I gather 'em all up. (Most aren't very long threads).

I'll try to do a quick summary too from what I learn from the threads. Just a preliminary perusal yields these thoughts (not my opinion, just what I've gleaned, if anyone can add experienced comment please do!):

For lower end spending many people seem to think Kenmores and Janomes are good.

Singers from 1990's and newer are prone to problems, Singer quality has gone downhill somewhat.

Experience with Brother is more mixed.

If you have more $$ to spend or can get good quality used, Viking and Bernina get good ratings.

Going to a good repair or dealer shop can sometimes yield a bargain, or at least they can tell you what brands to avoid.

Some people have also found good deals on older models at thrift stores/yard sales, then taken to a repair shop for oiling/cleaning. Might be a good option for someone wanting to get their feet wet without a lot of initial $ output. You can always upgrade later.

Of what specifically. There's been some awesome info posted. Also if you want to compare specific features, another great resource is www.patternreview.com

of the threads. some have great little descriptions on what they are about like "what options are a must to get". this is a neat list though (I am subbing so I dont loose it before I get to read them all), but descriptions would make it more comprhesive.
