Hello All,

I am not ttc right now, but want to share an experience I had this last cycle. For various reasons I decided to stop drinking coffee (as I have many times before!). I already drank very little by modern American standards: one tall cup a day, half decaf, made according to the directions (ie water, compared to starbucks). So as of my last AF I thought, ok that's it, no more. A little cafix and black tea now and then, but I dropped the big one (some people cite studies showing tea has more caffeine than coffee, but that's by the pound, not the reality of drinking it).

Well, I had been thinking that my fertility was just naturally declining in the last year or so- I'm 30 and cm was not looking fertile, or nowhere near what it was before. This month, with no coffee, I followed the predictable textbook pattern of my relative youth and had copious ewcm, ovulation signs, etc. While I know it could simply have been a fertile cycle after some infertile cycles, I feel sure it was the no coffee/little caffeine that changed things. Maybe that will be useful to some of the folks here. I'd be interested in hearing any other anecdotal connections between fertility and caffeine or coffee.

Since I am not ttc I am drinking my coffee in earnest!

Interesting question and I was wondering too.

Last year...both DH and I gave up coffee. We didn't drink alot but we did conceive twice already and took us 2 months each time. Unfortunately we had miscarriages.

Now we are TTC a third time and this is cycle #2 for TTC. After my last miscarriage...we both started drinking a cup of coffee a day. That's it. I don't really like coke. I've heard that green tea can mess things up. I'd rather have a cup of coffee than a cup of tea in my stressful...mundane job I'm in right now!!!!

Anyway....we are both thinking that if we don't conceive this month...then we may give up coffee. I'll let you know.

I also know lots of people that drink a cup or two a day and had no problems conceiving and no m/c....like my sister in law!!!

Research indicates that it is not the reduction in caffeine but the increase in tea that helped you, Liz. All you coffee and Coke addicts, consider switching to tea!

Abylite, I've never heard that green tea could be a problem for fertility. Where did you hear that?

Hello! This is my first post - my sister introduced me to Mothering. I was so happy to see the subject of coffee/caffine because I know it's not great for you, but don't exactly know why. My dh and I have been ttc for about 5 months and have almost totally given up coffee. We drink caffinated tea though... I read (in a Smoothies for Life recipe book) that the caffine in tea is not harmful to your health for some reason. I also read in that same book that caffine from coffee can reduce fertility by up to 50%!! Anyway, chai lattes (made with black tea) have been almost as satisfying as a cup of coffee in the morning, so I'm hoping that this info is true!! Anyone know of more reliable sources concerning what/what not to eat/drink while ttc?

I really think it had more to do with the dehydrating effects of coffee, though I am familiar with the black tea theory. I always drank black tea as well as coffee; same amount of tea minus the coffee seemed to have the cm result.

Ina May Gaskin's new book has some good information on nutrition for pregnancy; this might be helpful for conception, too, but the main idea is simply to eat real food, not fake food. Whole grains, dry beans, plenty of soy products. Water as the main beverage.

There is a list of vitamins and minerals to take to reverse ASCUS pap smears; perhaps such supplements, in normalizing the cervix, would also aid healthy cm production? Anyone know anything about this?

Thanks for sharing! I am working on increasing ewcm this cycle. I conceived my dds (quickly) when drinking very little coffee and drinking lots of tea. I really should be doing this again, as it has been 5 cycles now with no luck. (I am drinking coffee everyday) I am hooked on it right now. Time to get serious and make tea instead I think!

good luck giving up coffee, brandi. i periodically try for both health and sanity as well as fair trade and political issues. i also thought that caffeine addiction wasn't great for a doula, but my dose is so mild i can go without. one induction at five am two hours from my house, though, and i wondered what i had been thinking! i didn't dare venture from the house without it!

try cafix to replace your coffee. i like it very much now and it does soothe that urge for the hot bitter beverage.

Thanks Liz! I only drink one cup a day, so it should not be too hard, but I do enjoy it. I am drinking tea this morning. It is a ritual thing for me I think. Especially as the weather gets colder. I will look for cafix and give it a try.

Hey ladies,

I have had a coffee addiction since living in Hawaii in 1991. Back then it was a coupla mugs of Kona Coast chocolate macadamia nut, or an organic blend from a friend's plantation. Then I went back to school in the coffee capital of North America, and it was at least one doubletallmocha2%180withwhip per day.

I also experienced waning youthfull cervical fluid, LizD. I tried for years to conceive, against a few obstacles. One year of charting proved dh was out of town gigging 9 out 12 fertile cycles! Diagnosed with thyroid issue and straightened that out.

But I finally conceived dd in 1999 after switching to decaf, for 2 months.

Up until 3 months ago, I was drinking decaf every other day or so. I quit cold turkey, and I kid you not, I had severe withdrawal symptoms - off of DECAF. Terrible headache for 3 days, general malaise. But then I was fine. But it kind of freaks me out that it could affect me so strongly. So now I just enjoy the smell and lust after it in my imagination. These days I enjoy raspberry leaf tea, peppermint, etc. My husband's a Brit and we always have Tetley around but I quit caffeine completely - almost...

On occasion I treat myself to a talldecaf2%180mochawithwhip-easyonthechocolate.

ROFL

My friend quit coffee TTC her second and got pg but dranks pots of it and conceived (unexpectedly) with her first. Not sure if it does do anything. I was drinking Coke regularly and got pg with dd. This time it's coffee I am addicted to but haven't had any in a few days. All this talk of it makes me want some though!! I just saw on Oprah today the world's most expensive coffee Kopi Luwak coffee ... a lb of it costs $300!! Apparently the beans are harvested, I kid you not, from the dung of some animal!!! YUCK! The animal eats the bean and people gather it from the dung!!! You can get it at a place called the coffee critic.com or something like that.

EnviroBecca- I poured through tons of fertility books last year and came across something about green tea that does something with female eggs. I wish I remember where I saw it. I guess after reading that I've stayed away while TTC or while Pg.

I guess you guys are convincing that if we don't conceive this month...I may give up my one morning cup of coffee for a cup of black tea.

I hope that we did conceive this month...we'll see!

lovemygirl,

180 degrees, meaning I hate paying $3.50 for a latte and having it be lukewarm within seconds. So I always ask for it to be 180. Extra hot just doesn't cut it. At least I used to:

I have a friend who drinks at least 2 or more doube-shot drinks a day and had NO PROBLEM conceiving twice, albeit she is in her twenties. But it's NOT FAIR, just the same.

I just had my thyroid dosage adjusted again, after years of being jerked between two different doses that never evened out, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed now. And then maybe I can have a decaf without feeling guilty.

I think this is a huge thing too. Before I was TTC, I had somewhat irregular periods, and no obvious signs of ovulation. When dh and I decided to TTC, I cut out ALL caffeine... ALL. No coffee, no tea, no soda, no chocolate. For 2 months. My periods were like clockwork, and I felt confident of when I was ovulating. It took us 6 weeks to conceive... twins!

Hmm... OK... well, maybe THAT part wasn't planned.

Seriously, I think caffeine has terrible impact on fertility, and have read as much in various book, journals too.

Same goes with alcohol. I can't remember exact figure, but it was scary... women who had 1 drink A WEEK (!!) were measurably less fertile than those who didn't drink at all.

Twinmommy, you have just completely restored my faith in conviction of quitting caffeine 100%. Thanks.

I remember reading those statistics too, it's just been so long that I sort of....forgot....I suppose.

Wait a second. Did you actually say - no chchchchocolate??

I am such a strong believer in lifestyle affecting fertility for many of us. I don't mean this in a pejorative way, just the day to day impacts of our modern lives and modern food/drink consumption habits are detrimental for some who would otherwise have fine fertility. (Of course there are many other things impacting fertility that we can't control, but that's not what I'm talking about here.)

I think it's important to note that there are no doubt hoards of women who aren't affected by it. They could put any substance into their bodies, and for whatever reason, they can handle it well and it causes no problems.

But I know for some of us, that's just not the case. Better safe than sorry.

Along those lines, I also find it facinating that when I re-introduced caffeine when dd and ds were around 3 months old (I would have one cup of half-caf in the morning), my milk supply plummeted. It bounced right back when I stopped. There's definitely some hormonal connection there for me, no question.

Good luck!

I remember reading a study once (but don't know where, so I can't site it) that was comparing marijuana smoking and coffee on sperm performance (compared to no coffee, mj). mj spermies were fast, but so disoriented they could find the egg. Coffee spermies were faster than normal with no ill effects...they could find eggies and implant. dh took this to mean he could still consume coffee...although only in moderation because anything in excess is going to cause problems.
