I keep hearing such great things about using Calgon to help keep residue off of diapers. Is this the same bottle of Calgon that you put in your bath? Or, is there a Calgon detergent out there that I'm missing? And, is it the same as using Borox?

Enlighten me...I want to try some!

Calgon is a water softener - it comes in a box in the detergent aisle, usually right next to White King and Borox - these products work differently, it really has to be Calgon (the bath stuff makes it have the same slippery feeling). It's about $6 a box here, but worth it. I stripped my dipes (put them through the wash with a 1/2 c. of Calgon until no more suds - the suds are from detergent residue in your dipes) - it took 7 times! Yikes! Now I add 1/2 c. every few loads to keep them residue-free and smelling fresh. The stuff works great!

ok, I just wanted to comment on the smell factor here for a moment:

I bought some Calgon, not sure if it really did work on my diapers or not b/c I have super soft water as it is....anyway, the smell is AWFUL!!!!! it is overwhelmingly perfumey!! :puke

If you hate the smell of strong (I mean STRONG) perfumey detergent, then this stuff will make you gag. Make sure you rinse that stuff out of your diapers really well. I had to rinse mine a couple of times just to get the smell out. And I only used betweein 1/4 and 1/2 cup. ewwwww!!!!

but if you NEED to strip your diapers, then you might want to try it, just make sure you leave the house when you do

I used the recommended amount 1.5 cups and they dont come out all perfumey smelling ... It must rinse out in the process. I have noticed my FB's look alot whiter and the normal piling that you have seems to have a lil less pilling ! Whooohooooo.... Now i have to do my 2nd half of my stash today.

I have had very good success with it as well, but will second the "perfumy" comment. Yuck! : I usually only add about 1/4C to my final wash (with extra rinse)--I do this every 4th or 5th load and it's helped with the "diaper stink" better than anything else I've tried.

Thanks all! I have looked at my grocery store near the Borox and around the detergent, and never could find it. I'll have to try super Walmart or something...I really want to give it a try.

I hate perfumy stuff too, so I'll be sure and rinse well! I'm not sure if I have a build-up problem or not, so we'll see. One of those "don't know what you're missing" type of things! :LOL

I'm a big fan of Calgon. I don't really understand the "perfumey" description. I'm normally very sensitive to commercial fragrances and it doesn't bother me at all. I put it in with the detergent - I figure it's there to help break down the detergent, not as a rinse. Maybe that's why the smell for others. I also use a very, very small amount - maybe half a capful - because I have a front loading washer and use very little detergent or water.

It seems to work for some people and not for others. It may have something to do with what types of minerals are in your hard water. I think borax also has water softening qualities but I'm not enough of a chemistry buff to know the difference - I just know that it has worked wonders on our scratchy dipes.

I only noticed a slightly perfumey quality to it as I was putting it in the water. By the time it rinsed out and stripped the dipes, the dipes just smell like chlorine from our local hard water. The powdered Calgon has more scent to it than the liquid.

i've been having issues finding the stuff too. everyone either looks at me like i'm crazy, takes me to the bubble bath isle, or plain thinks i've made it up. i've tried walgreens, safeway, riteaid, target, local 5&dime shop, ACE hardware, and no luck!

i'd hate to pay shipping, but i know drugstore.com carries it. any other ideas of where i might try before ordering it online?

thanks!

I found the powder to be VERY perfume-y. The liquid still smells, but not nearly as strong, and that's what I use. It has not ever made my diapers or clothes smell that I can tell. (Neither did the powder.)

I buy mine at the commissary on base. It's located with the bleach, not with the borax.

Did you try Walmart? I found both the liquid & the powder forms there.

the closest walmart is about 20 miles away... it might be worth it, since it's near the babies r us, and i monst likely will be going there to return/exchange things after the shower this saturday.

I found mine at Safeway and Fred Meyer. Freddies is a little cheaper. It's not at our Super WMT here, though. I have the powder and it is a little perfumey, but not overwhelming to me - kind of a gross scent, though. It's never bothered me once it is rinsed out, which is kind of funny b/c I'm asthmatic and usually scents really irritate me.
