so forget about the recall for a minute (oh if only i could)
.

Proposition 54 failed!!!

I am so bumed out and cynical these days that it just really didn't occur to me that prop 54 might not pass!

Gotta remember to celebrate the victories we do have, even if they're few and far between.

I was really nervous when I realized that Prop 54 was on the ballot with the recall, as I feared that it would get lost in the shuffle, and would be more likely to pass.

Prop 54 would have made the following into law (I've only included the meat of the proposed statute):

Quote:
(a) The state shall not classify any individual by race, ethnicity, color or national origin in the operation of public education, public contracting or public employment.

(b) The state shall not classify any individual by race, ethnicity, color or national origin in the operation of any other state operations, unless the legislature specifically determines that said classification serves a compelling state interest and approves said classification by a 2/3 majority in both houses of the legislature, and said classification is subsequently approved by the governor.

(c) For purposes of this section, "classifying" by race, ethnicity, color or national origin shall be defined as the act of separating, sorting or organizing by race, ethnicity, color or national origin including, but not limited to, inquiring, profiling, or collecting such data on government forms.

(d) For purposes of subsection (a), "individual" refers to current or prospective students, contractors or employees. For purposes of subsection (b), "individual" refers to persons subject to the state operations referred to in subsection (b).
See http://www.defeat54.org/initiative_text.shtml

For a measured analysis of the likely effects, had it become law, see http://www.cbp.org/2003/bb030813Prop54.pdf

Yes, Prop 54 failed AND Prop 53 too - whoo hoo.

also, and perhaps I am the only one to celebrate this here- I don't know - but I do think it's a good thing that Davis will never be what he had wanted to be - somebody's Vice President (of course, if the recall failed, he still would never be that). He is NOT the kind of dem that I support. Cruz too for that matter.

Perhaps the other good thing to come out of this election is for the state dems to really get their act toegther. There's so many other stronger leaders, smarter leaders, better leaders than those two.

Persevere.
