Lurking because I just heard of it today and am in the dark...
Gripe water is supposed to help with gas/colic/wind. My son used to love this, he stopped crying long enough for a dropperfull at the very least...and it stopped his hiccups, too. I brought some back home to the US for my nephew, he also liked it, made him have big loud burps.

http://www.gripe-water.co.uk/item371.htm

It says on the box "Since 1851" so it's been around a long while, at least in the UK. People swear by it, I wouldn't say it was miraculous, but it did seem to work to some degree.
I know fennel seed or dill seed tea helps to relax intestinal muscles to release gas more easily. When my first child had gas, I drank the tea, since I've heard it passes through breastmilk (she was only 6 months, so I didn't want to give it to her directly).

The recipe is very simple:

1 teaspoon fennel seeds or dill seeds
1 pint water (though I used to make it quite conc. for myself)

1. Pour boiling water over seeds. Steep for max. 15 minutes.
2. Strain out the seeds and you're done!
Here is the details from the site:

# Dill Oil warms and relaxes the tummy, breaking down trapped air bubbles.
# Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate neutralises acid in the baby's tummy.
# The results are usually a resounding burp.
# Active ingredients: Each 5ml spoonful contains: Terpeneless Dill See Oil 2.3mg, Sodium Bicarbonate BP 52.5mg. Also contains: E217, E219, Disodium EDTA
# Do not use this product if there are kidney problems or sensitivity to the preservative E217 and E219. Keep out of the reach of children.
# If symptoms persist consult your doctor.
Thank you everyone for all the info. I am going to check my health store today and see if they carry it. I didn't know about fennel and dill seed, thanks for that too. I use bay leaves and steep it then cool it down to give her but it doesn't do much and she doesn't care for the taste so I don't get much in her. I'll let you know how it works.
