What kind of car seat is it? Sometimes they say on the side of the seat on one of those stickers that are plastered all over it. If not do a search for the company and you can find the car seat specs there.

The baby's height is also a factor in determining if they have outgrown the seat. I know my baby isn't at the weight limit yet, but he's already too long at 29".

There is a message board I visit that is all about car seats, but I don't think I'm allowed to post a link for it. If you'd like to know what it is, let me know.
Im sure you can post the link everyone else posts links. Okay I just checked his car seat he is at the wieght and 1.5 inches over the length, time to put the sitting care seat in the truck, what worries me is I don't think I can put that seat so it is not facing forward, good thing our truck has a back seat!!!

They're great about answering questions.
he needs to be rearfacing until atleast 1 year and 20 pounds, and should stay RF to the limits of his seat. you can pick up a cosco scenera for under $50 at target or walmart.
nak

the health nurse told me at 20 lbs they can be forward facing, there is no way the bigger carseat can be rearfacing, won't buckle in and where would his legs go? folded in half lol.

Babies must be rear-facing until they are at least one year old AND over 20 pounds.

The nurse is WRONG. It is a matter of muscular maturity and not just weight. Your child's neck ligaments are not nearly strong enough yet to withstand crash forces. His legs will be just fine folded in front of him.

Then how do I clip the bigger seat into the truck? there is no way to. Alright I am a moron I admit it, I looked on the sticker on th seat and it can be rearfacing!!!. Sorry, yes the health nurse sucks!!!
What kind of car seat is it? Do you know the brand/model? Most car seats made for babies/toddlers can be installed either rear or forward facing. The ones that only forward-face are designed for toddlers/preschoolers MUCH larger than your baby. There is just no way your six-month-old can be safe if that is the kind of seat you have.
If you don't have the original owner's manual with installation instructions, you can probably download a manual from the manufacturer's website.

I quote off the car seat sticker it is a Costco touriva"Infants who weight between 5-35 lbs and are 19-35 inches tall face the rear in the reclined position
s 22-40lbs and 26-40 inches face forward. Use only where the lap belt can be tightened securely. Top tether must be secured as specified in the instructions.(which I no longer have but know how as this seat was ds1's)snugly adjust the belts provided with this child restraint around you child;the shield alone will not restrain your child."

This is were I was stuck on the rear facing thing, i did not think this seat could rear face till I looked at the sticker, But thank you so much on pointing out the dangers for me. He is 22 lbs and 27 inches long so he is to big for his infant seat, so he needs the bigger one. Thanks again.

I'm glad you figured it out. It's important for children to stay rfing as long as possible, in Canada that is generally 30#. Is your seat specifically Canadian? ?If it is, it looks like it can be used to 35#, yay! My son was 32mos when he turned ffing, 34# and 37".

if it's an overhead shield seat, you might want to think about replacing it. you said it was your older sons, how old is it? carseats expire, usually 6 years after the manufacture date, but it depends on who made it.

It has a sticker on it that says Canadian Transport, so maybe it is specifically Canadian. Thanks

Yes it has a overhead shield, DS1 just turned 5 so the car seat is still good for a coulple years, I had no idea they expired!!! Good to know, so by the time this one expires he should be ready for the booster. Thanks.
The Touriva has a 6 year expiry from the date of manufacture, so you should really check the manufacturing date on it while you are installing. There should also be an expiry date stamped somewhere on the back of the shell, but I am too lazy right now to get up and check where exactly it is on my Touriva. Often, car seats will sit on the shelf for a while so it may already be expired.

If it has an overhead shield, it may well be impossible to get installed safely in the back seat of the truck, especially RF. Just a heads up, I know how small those back seats can be. Also, OH Shields tend to not fit infants as well as 5-point harnesses do (a broad generalization, I know.)

If that is the case, you can buy a new Touriva/Scenera (the redesign for this year) at Zellers or Walmart for $89 with a 5-point harness. They no longer make the OH shield version for sale in Canada.

Your younger son might not be ready for a booster once that Touriva expires either, just a heads up. In Canada, our lowest limit booster is 40 lbs, but we do have combination seats that can be harnessed to 48 lbs, unlike the US.

Oh, and as for the public health nurse, ignore her. Um, I will try and keep my opinions about them to myself this time.

I think this thread is over lol. Im getting a new one, no shield as ICBC(car insurace company said there are not very safe anymore)with a 5 point harness. Thanks to all.
No problem. Also, if you need help getting the seat installed (or just want to make sure it's done properly), ICBC and BCAA have a program to inspect car seats. Just call them at 1-877-247-5551 and they will get you an appointment (it takes a couple weeks up here, less in the GVRD) it's free, and certainly can't hurt.

Oh yeah, and when shopping, if you have a Bay nearby check and see if they have any clearance models. I got a Comfort Ride (Touriva with extra padding) for $69 last week at the local store
