she's 8 mos old, and take antibx daily for UTI prophylaxis- i want to start giving her kefir, which is made in 2% milk currently, though i can change that. It's usually not organic milk these days for $ reasons, but it is hormone and antibx free. it;s cows milk, so i am leery... but is it ok??

TIA!

Well yogurt is said to be okay at 8 months so I'd say its fine, but I would start out with a very very very small amount.

I would do goats milk for a babe that young but only if I had to. How about momma milk kefir?

I'm also leery of cow's milk for young ones. DD hasn't had any, though that's partially due to the fact that her father's allergic. She used to react to it when I'd have it when she was a wee one - she'd get a red bottom if I had a cup of kefir, which I'm hearing isn't all that uncommon.

So, if you've had reactions, I'd say definitely no cow's milk kefir. If you didn't have reactions.. I'd still rather give an infant's probiotic than feed kefir. I'm thinking that the gut isn't yet ready for the kind of cultures that are in kefir but DD is pulling at me atm so I can't look it up. There's a special strain of bacteria only found in infant's guts that's made into probiotics..
