She's nearly 10 mo & so far we've only given finger foods, which she chews up & spits most of it out. I'm running out of foods to offer - she'll eat most fruit & some veg - so can i offer her what dh & i are eating? Obviously not things like peanuts & shellfish, but what about lentils, beans, grains (other than wheat) & mildly spiced food like dahl? Are these too much for her system right now?<br>

Heck yeah! I think that's the best method. Most of what 15-month-old DD eats is our food, or some version/component thereof. In fact, she seems to like food better if it's what we're eating and comes directly off my plate. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile"><br><br>
She LOVES lentils in any form. Brown rice, quinoa, bits of potato or sweet potato, whatever veggies we are eating, cheese, even bits of the meat we are eating if it's soft and chewable enough. Much of it ends up on the floor/in her chair, but she gobbles much of it down too.<br><br>
If her system can't handle it, she'll let you know, one way or another. Either she won't eat it, or, well, you'll find out later on. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/orngbiggrin.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="orange big grin"> As always, follow the four-day rule (wait four days in between introducing new foods) so you can more easily ID the culprit if there's a problem.<br><br>

Hey thanks, that's great to know. Gives us a lot more to offer her now! Can i give her seeds, like sesame & sunflower? I guess like u said i should just try it & wait to see if it agrees with her or not.<br>

That's what I did with both of my girls, and they didn't have any problems with allergies or anything like that. If either of them had shown signs of an allergic reaction, I would have backed up and tried to isolate the allergen, rather than doing "allergy testing' on every single food that passed their lips.<br><br>
IMO, feeding individual foods at first is part of the reason toddlers and preschoolers tend to be such picky eaters. Do you really WANT your DD to learn to eat only simple, bland foods, with no two foods mixed together and no seasonings added? Or would you rather she was introduced to foods with textures and flavors from a variety of international cousines?<br><br>
Remember that at 10mo she's not really eating solids for nourishement- breastmilk (and/or formula) is for nutrition and solids are for fun, for learning how to eat.

You're so right! I don't really like the thought of giving dd bland pureed mush, so i've never done that. I gave her an olive the other day to see if she'd take it & she absolutely loved it! And yes her main food is still BM - she won't eat much solid food even if i try! So, when does food start to replace BM? Is it a gradual transition that's different for every dc? That sounds pretty logical. Sometimes i wish i could just BF forever, cos it's so easy!

Yup -- IME, with both my kids, it was so gradual I didn't really even notice that it was happening, until one day I thought, "Gee, DC hardly ever nurses during the day anymore..." Just follow your DC's lead. as long as you are both comfortable with the nursing relationship, it can last a lot longer even while you experiment with solids and afterwards. There's actually a forum here for "child-led weaning" when you are ready to learn more about that, too! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile">
