I planted lettuce in containers on the deck this summer. We absolutely love it! DH asked me today if we could grow lettuce over the winter down in the basement, but I don't know. We have a 4 tray grow light system already set up down there and it stays at about 65F all year round. What do you think? Is the cost of running 4 florescent lights worth it?

Our house is almost completely windows on the back side of the house. They face southwest and they are always uncovered in the winter to allow the sun to heat the house. Would I be able to grow lettuce upstairs with just natural light coming in?

Also, is there anything else we can grow and eat (other than herbs) during the winter?
