Are they that hard? What would I need to do this? How would I do it? Where would I get instructions? We're moving to a place with no laundry facilities (well, they have coin laundry but it's expensive) and we're considering buying a Wonder Washer for diapers. I'm having a hard time deciding whether or not we can afford to cloth diaper, stupid I know, but paying 20 bucks at a time for 40 diapers is a lot different than paying 20 bucks at a time for one cloth diaper. Right now we've got about 9 diapers, but they are all sizes M-L, and we have no newborn dipes. I can sew and have a sewing machine (two actually), but I don't have a serger. Is that a problem? Argh. I'm stressing out. I can't sleep when I think about it.

Unless you do it the way described at Fern and Faerie I really can't see it being cost effective to sew prefolds, when you can get them fairly cheap from granitesmith on eBay. I'm a sewer too, but prefolds are so easy to come by and far less fuss to just purchase them.

Also, you've been here long enough, you could post an ISO this size prefold on the diapering trading post, and get plenty that way.

If you want to use the prefold twill that real prefolds are made of it's more cost effective to just buy them... unless you're making a whole stash, then you can buy the twill in bulk and save money over buying them ready made.

If you're going to use a thick interlock t-shirt material, I'd put about 4 layers in the center and 2 layers on either side. If you're using a thinner jersey type t-shirt material, I'd put 5 or 6 in the center and 3 on either side.

HTH!
