Can Sweat Peas grow down?

1099 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  myhoneyswife
I have a deck that's raised, we live on a hill, so it's like 6 feet off the ground at the end. Can I train my sweet peas to grow down? Or do they need to grow up? I thought it would be pretty to have them cascade down the posts, but didn't know. Just curious. Could also have them grow up the railing, but I don't know how well that would work because it's just 2x6s like 2 feet apart.

You could always hang a string down along the railings for them to climb up. That's how my clematis gets up the side of our pergola.
Good idea, you mean run the string vertically, right? That could be cool. I'm all excited. I couldn't wait any longer and just planted some sugar peas in a pot out there too. I may just go ahead and have a container garden on the patio and a big one on the hill, just for fun

Tehy will grow to the sun, so they won't grow down.

However, if you tie the string every 6" or so and throw it over the edge, you should be able to get them to climb right up to you!

Ivy's and hanging plants will droop over the edge and drape down.
Gotcha gotcha. I have ivy on top of my china hutch/computer desk that is growing down, it's pretty cool. Maybe I'll get a big pot of it for the deck also, make a little habitat out there
It's surprisingly hard to kill, which is very good!

Thanks!
