Yes. If they break before any contractions start it's called PROM, premature rupture of membranes.

I see you are due in a few days, did yours just break? :

I hope I'm not overstepping my bounds--she's being induced on her due date because an ultrasound has her baby measuring big.

Definitely have hope! If you are feeling anxious about getting induced, just say no! Don't go. Once you begin, they are not going to let you get up and walk out, so be sure before you consent. There is not a single medical indication (from what you've said in the past postings) for an induction. U/S measurements are not accurate even to the closest pound! If your intuition is telling you that you should stay pregnant, then listen to it. Your baby will come when he or she is ready.

You have hired this OB, you are the consumer. Be a WISE consumer and know what you are buying! You are allowed to say no to him or her.

Good luck!

I wouldn't hope for that if I were you! yes, for some people that's another step towards birthing the babe, but for most it just means you are on the clock! Your doc will then put you on antibiotics and give you a time limit.

oh wait, you probably won't get this since you are probably at the hospital!

oh well

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't want your waters to break. Pray for labour, YES, but water breaking - no... if baby is in at all of an awkward position, the waters breaking will make contractions considerably more painful and cause a much greater likelihood of failure to progress because of the positioning (trust me, I know from my last birth unfortunately)...

Good luck to you though! Personally, I'd just stay away from the induction totally. Ask for a Biophysical profile and/or non-stress test if you're concerned.

Also, the pp stated it might be because the baby looks large. I'll tell you a bit of a story... in many european countries they look DOWN on women who have smaller than 8 to 9lb babies, thinking they must have starved themselves or something, and they PITY them because they believe that labour is actually HARDER and SLOWER when the baby is small. Remember, a "large" baby is going put more pressure on the cervix, causing it to open more quickly, etc. Baby fat squishes.

Just some food for thought

those us screens for size are notoriously wong. + or - 2 pounds. if your body grew that baby- there is no reason to think your body can't birth that baby.

unless there are medical reasons to induce (mama or baby are in danger right now)-- don't mess with mother nature!

there is a theory - the cascade of interventions. induction doesn't work if the baby isn't ready to come and leads you on a course for an unecessary c-section.
