Can we get a sticky that explains how an intact baby should be treated in the ER. If the doc wants to insert a catheter what are the options?

I know this has been discussed before, and probably will be again in Tummy's post, but it would be so much easier if we had clear instructions to print out and take with us if we are ever in that situation.

What do you guys think???

Frank, I found the intact care agreement. I think it would be wise for parents to have a copy with them at all times, especially if they are headed to the hospital but I was thinking a sticky that would list all of the options.

Like, the doc insists he needs to do a cath, what are a parents options, what to ask for, etc.

When a doc is standing there scaring the wits out of a parent that your sick child NEEDS a cath for whatever reason they come up with it would be great to have something on hand, printed, that tells us what questions to ask, etc. And, also explains the correct way to do it, that they don't have to be retracted for it.

What do you guys think? I would love to have that information in one place where I can print it all out and add it to the intact care agreement to take with me.

This has been an issue I feel really strongly about. I have responded many times to posts about ER mistreatment. Because of that, I too think it should be it's own sticky or if Frank would edit the original post to specifically address the ER situation (nurses usually not trained in proper use of catheter on intact infants or toddlers or young boys combined with parental distress of a sick or hurt child)

Ok, ok, okaay! Here's the situation: I am very careful in my writings not to cross the line of giving medical advise beyond my place and expertise. I could get into some serious trouble for that. So far I have not even come close to that line but this one worries me some that I could at the very least come close to that line if not cross it. I will write something, but for this task, I need some expert advice. I will contact my sources and see if I can find someone to work with me in crafting a post that will give the requested information and at the same time, will not get me into any legal hot water. Give me a few days and I will post it here first and then we'll decide if it should be an edit to the original post in the "Warning" thread or a thread of it's own and go from there.

Thank you, Frank!

I see your point on the medical advice part. If you decide you don't want to tread in that water maybe just we can find some links that explain how a cath is supposed to be done on an intact male and then some info on alternatives (isn't there a little catch thing, sorry for the loose terminology, that they can tape over the penis to catch urine?).

I know they can do that for girls, and it seems like it would be easier to do so on boys! I'd request that for my ds over a catheter any day!

Thanks Frank!!! If you can't because of legal issues, that is completely understandable. I tried to do an internet search on inserting a catheter on an intact penis, and came up with very little. The only thing I really found on it was this pamphlet - http://www.nocirc.org/publish/6pam.pdf , under the paragraph "Would my son's foreskin need to be retracted if he were catheterized for a urinalysis or medical treatment?" So, it's something we could use.

I'm thinking I'm going to write Doctors Opposing Circumcision with a link to the "Warning" sticky and explain exactly what it is that we need. I suspect they would be happy to have one of their doctors write something that would cover the bases. That way, we get something custom tailored to what we want from a credentialed expert and I don't venture near that forbidden ground. That way, we all come out winners!

The little catch thing taped over the penis procedure is called "Bagging" or catching the urine in a bag.
