Can you believe this? Today I was watching Birthday and the doc/anastialigist(sp) was going on about how an epi does not cause any adverse effects. That does not cause things like prolonged labor in people (though he'd seen a couple and that's what pitocin was for) or increased risk of c-section. He was saying how there have been studies that prove no increased risk. : All the studies and stuff that I've read seem to state the oppisite of what he was saying. Why do they allow such misinformation on TV?

It's such an over-the-top claim that an epidural can cause no adverse effects. I mean, c'mon, even aspirin and Tylenol have adverse effects. He's trying to say that a numbing narcotic is the equivalent to drinking clean water, or taking a breath of fresh air? No way some one like that is putting a hole in my back!

I finally stopped watching those shows too. I was addicted until I became more and more educated on the topic. Now I can't watch it without going into a fear of my own since I am in my late stages of pg myself!

I watch these shows when I want to get pissed off.

My favorite was Special Delivery, which I normally can't watch because I want to throw something at the TV. On this episode, a woman went in for a cesarean for twins, and the narrator says "Because of the lack of room in the womb, twins NEVER go to term." I thought that was such an inane comment. Then, a woman was being induced because she was EIGHT DAYS OVERDUE! "By this point, she should have a one week old newborn" and they have to induce "to save the baby and mother." It's hilarious. And this was her first child, too.

When I say hilarious, I mean it in a "if I don't laugh, I'm going to cry" sort of way.

This stuff really TICKS me off....

Especially when there are women out there who watch these shows and take what these doctors and people say as being true... some women do not take the time to research or question doctors and it makes me mad that they spout off misinformation.

Oh my god, I can't watch these shows either. I can't even watch a baby story, it drives me NUTS.

I think some people probably get the majority of their knowledge of birth from these shows unfortunate!

Unfortunetely, I was one of those women during my first pregnancy.. I didn't have a computer, I was 18 (and very oblivious), and I had no one to tell me otherwise. Now I pregnant with my third (1st up/uc). It took me a while to get to this point and I'm so sad when I see others making the same mistakes that I made.. Like a friend of mine who just had a c-section because her ob told her that vbac is unsafe and she could lose her baby. She was 37 weeks when they sliced her.. Ugh, makes me tear up just thinking about how manipulating the medical community can be :

::

Yep, I saw an episode of A Baby Story where the mother was asking about risks of epidurals and all the doctor had to say was, "Don't worry, it's totally safe."

Well, he was probably not lying, just telling his perception of the truth.

What he probably meant was that "all mothers are going to choose anesthesia for childbirth and epis are low-risk compared to other available anethsia for this purposse." It's scary that doctors can be so clueless.

On one of the shows I watched, I can't remember which one, a woman's labor was moving along too slowly, so the doctor recommended AROM. Her husband asked "if we break the waters, will that add more stress to the baby?" And the doctor said "Well, it's a procedure, like all procedures, but it would help." Totally avoiding the answer, which is YES.

I think most of these doctors are running a fine line between "perception of truth" and flat out lies.

Those docs disgust me...I've seen moms rushed to section because of bp dropping after and epidural. Also epis can artificially elevate WBC's in mom and baby causing a longer hospital stay and unneeded treatment, IV, abx.

I've also been in those shows...in a delivery being filmed( my SIL once woke up my bro by screaming "your sister is on tv", he thought I was being arrested or something)...half the time nothing exciting is going on and you'll hear the voice over say something like "in the nick of time, they blah, blah blah" and I'm sitting there like what was happening? Absolutely nothing. But that doesnt make good tv.

I am happy to say that I have never watched any of those shows.

Once I used the word "meconium" in a sentence and someone complimented me with, "Well, I see someone has been watching A Baby Story" as if there were no other sources from which a non or never-been pregnant woman could learn of such a thing.

Same here. When I was pregnant with DS I was only 17 and I watched "A Baby Story" and "Bringing Home Baby" on a daily basis. Now that I look back and realize all the interventions in my first birth were totally unnecessary I feel very guilty for not educating myself better. I thought I was prepared because I had read through "What to Expect When You're Expecting" twice. :
Ugh...watching that stupid show is the WORST thing a pregnant woman can do to learn about how pregnancy and birth can be. There are people/family members that are just shocked when a new mama takes "so long" to have her baby. Ummm...they probably didn't pop it out in 30 minutes either...it's called editing people.

We have electively discontinued our cable because of the unhealthy views that were being pumped into our dc. I too was addicted to those shows during my last pg but now I much prefer YouTube. I just search homebirth and/or waterbirth; they've got some wonderful videos on there. Of course you don't get a "new episode" daily but there's usually a new one posted every two or three days.
