Hi everyone,
You would think that with three kids, i would know what chicken pox looks like, right? Well, my youngest who is 6, and has been out of school since the third week in May, came into our bed last night complaining of "itchies".

So he just woke up and he has little cluster like bunches of blisters, some small, some larger, that look suspiciously like chicken pox. However, whats puzzling me is where it started....on the backs of his knees, his butt, the outer part of his wrists, and in/on his groin. They are very itchy. With my other kids, they got it on the truck area first. with my daughter it spread from there, with my son, it stayed on his trunk/back area.

At first i thought maybe it was an allergic reaction to the new sunscreen i was using by Bullfrog. But i didn't spray his butt or groin, kwim?

So, without a picture, have any of you mamas had experience with chickenpox starting on the but, knees and wrists?

And can i use cortisone cream, or should i stick with oatmeal baths?

Thank you so much for replying!

Yes, clusters of blisters. In fact, i no longer think its chicken pox, because after i gave him benadryl, the blisters, all of them, went away and he stopped itching completely. Its been all day, and now one of the clusters behind his knees (his knee-pits is what he calls them!) is back and itching.

We went for indian food last night. I am wondering if he had some sort of allergic reaction from a spice, as he has never eaten indian food (but he loves Thai curry). I know he didnt go outside to play, except for when we went to the pool to swim. I dont remember him being near bushes (as for the poison ivy).

if it is poison ivy, what should i do? can i do the benadryl and the oatmeal bath? My friend made me a batch of tea tree, lavender, chamomile spray to mist on the itchy areas.

I can give you the best and quickest way to get rid of poison ivy or any other rash. Of course not a rash due to a virus.

(It's an old remedy that was passed down from my grandmother who died at age 92 and never saw a doctor till she was 90.)

It only involves hot water and you can do it in two ways.

1. Run hot water (as hot as you can stand it) over the affected area for 10 - 20 seconds. No longer! Always test the water on your fingers first. When it itches so much that you can not stand it any longer, shut the water off. Don't dry the area, let it air dry. The itch will be gone within 3 seconds.

Repeat every time it itches. The first several hours you need to do it every 15 minutes or so. Then it will already be getting better. Do it often that first day because it will let you sleep better the first night. Continue to do it until it is dried up. It is the quickest cure.

2. It can also be done with a moist wash cloth that can be re-heated in the microwave or in a bowl with hot water. (That works best if you have to do it to a child.) Please make sure you test it on yourself every time before putting it on the child's rash. Again, just 10 - 20 seconds.

Gitti, thank you for replying!

I have given him benadryl already, so he is pretty comfy right now. But it looks like this could last anywhere from 10 days to three weeks. I will definitely try the hot water. I gave him a hot as he could stand it bath last night with Aveeno, wich seemed to help. Thankfully, he is able to rest, most likely because of the benadryl though, which i hate to give to him.

Again, thanks!

If it is poison ivy, it could have been brought in by your dog - my mom used to get it on her legs all the time from the dogs. You might try picking up some Tec-Nu by Oak N Ivy, which is a soap that will remove the urushiol (toxic oil) that will still be on his skin (regular soap and water won't remove it).

If it isn't poison ivy the Tec-Nu won't hurt, but it's worth a try.

Hope he's better soon!

Quirky, I had no idea it could come from our dog. I also have a cat that is an indoor and outdoor cat.

He is actually doing much better today. Only one bath, and i gave him his first dose of benadryl just a bit ago, so he wont itch in his sleep.

Interesting about the dog. It makes sense. wow.

Thanks to you and all who have taken the time to reply.
