have any of u started a retail business from home where most of ur clients are from the US? how did u work out shipping costs?

there is a plan from CanadaPost where u apply, get a card adn get 5% off purolater int'l, xpresspost, and expidited parcel--did u use this or how did u reduce shipping costs. I just need to be lead to the right direction

also, how would i get items thru customs without the customer getting charged? is there some type of plan u can purchase to reduce/eliminate those charges? and do u set shipping based on weight or offer a flat rate?

i plan on setting my prices in US only because i know most of my customers will be american; is it easier to do this or should i also offer the option of paying canadian?

if u've made it this far, thanks

We're in Alberta - Waves. We definitely use Canada Post, as it's the least expensive option. We haveboth a VentureOne card from the post-office and an account using theie electronic shipping tools module.

My understanding is that Americans don't pay duty/customs or any other charges on shipments under $200.00 US, I haven't had any customers get dinged yet, but sometimes I just cross my fingers .

As a Canadian it miffs me actually to see Canadian sites that only offer shopping in US funds. If you are a Canadian you should definitely offer the option of CA funds as well. I have two seperate portions on my site, the US catalogue, and Canadian catalogue .

Hope this helps.

the reason is because I generally sell mostly the the USA. I however do offer payment in Canadian funds through email transfer or paypal. My cart is set up so that shipping is figured afterwards and a total is sent to Canadians in American and Canadian funds. I do not think it is awful for me to sell in US dollars when it is easier for my American customers who are over 95% of my business anyway. To be honest my Canadian customers prefer to pay in US funds through paypal most times anyway.
