Dd is up right now with an unproductive cough. Normally I would (of course) give her some kind of cough suppressant...except that dh heard how an infant died b/c they weren't able to metabolize dextramorphan (ingred in meds for coughs) and "why take the risk" that dd wouldn't be able to either...even though she has had it in the past I think twice.

I want to give her SOMETHING but the only home remedy I found involved some herb root (I don't have) soaked 3 days in honey which she can't have! :

PLEASE PLEASE tell me someone has any ideas for helping her to stop coughing!!! I feel so horrible for her!!

Some ideas: Keep her warm. Turn the shower on as hot as you can and don't run the fan and hold her in the bathroom for a little while. Buy some nice chest rub and give her a little gentle chest massage, especially massage under the collar bone, you can also rub her feet, especially right at the base of the two toes from the big toe and the top of the big toe, gently.
There's not much to be done but I've found that this helps us both feel better
Oh also a humidifier can be great.

I'm almost certain if you cook the honey, it'll kill any botulism that might be in it? It's so rare to actually find tainted honey anyway...

There's a tea put out by Traditional Medicinals, actually, a lot of teas, for cough, cold, congestion, etc. Sweeten them up with a lot of honey and try that. We will not and do not use over the counter anything except limited ibuprofen and tylenol for bad pain, so this is what we're found to work best. Actually, we use Vick's vaporub, while drinking the tea, for really bad coughs.

Keep her neck warm. If you're holding your dd, a scarf could work.

My very old land lady from the Philippines taught me this. I didn't realize it would work as well or as fast. It almost sounded too simple.

I agree with the VapoRub but don't give her honey, even if it is cooked. The bacterium that causes botulism forms spores that can withstand heat.
