Do you play the Lottery or buy scratch tickets? Do you win much? Or do you just buy a ticket a few times a year when the winnings are really big?

What do you think of the Lottery? I remember hearing a comedian say that the Lottery is just a tax on people that can't do math. (I sort of agree : )

Do you know anyone who's won big? For those of you who only buy tickets for those news-making prizes (35 million Powerball or something), wouldn't the fact that 1000x more people are buying those tickets mean that the winnings would be divided into smaller portions?

I'm just bored at work. Humor me.

We don't buy lottery tickets. I think they're a huge waste of time and money. My dad has been buying Powerball tickets for years and years and has never won any significant amount of money.

My best friend's grandparents did win a St. Jude Dream Home, though. We do buy raffle tickets a lot.

I think that for the most part the lotterly preys on the poor and the uneducated. We do not regularly play the lottery, although we have occasionally (ie once a year or so) bought a ticket when the jackpot is really really high.

I've only bought a scratch off once, because when dh and I were dating he was "sure" I'd win because of beginner's luck. I didn't. I don't buy the kind where you pick the numbers, I don't even know how. When I was working and the office would go in together to buy a bunch of tickets for big jackpots I always threw in some money, though--I'd be DARNED if I was the only person in the whole office who didn't get a cut if they ever won!!

He only spends a dollar a week so if it makes him happy

My mom buys lottery tickets as some sort of work social thing. I think they only buy big games? They all chip in and buy a whole bunch at once. No one's ever won but they have fun with it.

I don't see the problem with buying lottery tickets if you are doing it for fun and if you keep your spending down. I buy one or two a year myself

I have never won on a scratch off ticket. If someone gives me one, I don't scratch it; I give it to my husband. We don't buy them but we've been given them for gifts (TACKY GIFT in my opinion ). Occasionally if the lotto goes above 40 or 50 million, we might buy one or two tickets but I think we know we don't have a chance.

I think that sums it up nicely. I've never purchased a lottery ticket in my life.

1) I have to agree that it's a tax on...to put it kindly, unrealistic people

2) I don't believe in trying to get something for nothing

my mom and aunt used to play the scratch offs all the time when I was younger.

I think that I have maybe bought 10-20 in my adult lifetime

Just this weekend I took a $5 bill and bought a few and won $89

It's a tax. It's a VOLUNTARY tax. I don't volunteer for taxes. Never bought one, never will.

I don't play... now I belong to a religion that prohibits gambling, but before I wasn't interested in it anyway. My mom used to play it all the time, and she's involved with some kind of pool at work. I would rather keep my money than pay a bunch for the chance to maybe get a whole lot of money, especially after seeing her buy so many tickets for such a small return, and seeing people buy tickets, win on them, and just put the money into more tickets. But some people really seem to enjoy it... like a hobby for them... I suppose there are more harmful pasttimes.

I've gotten tickets as stocking stuffers a few times. Once in a while I'll join an office pool that buys 50 tickets or something like that -- that's more a fun social thing.

But basically, I figure my odds of winning are almost identical whether I buy a ticket or not, so why buy a ticket?

I know a couple who won....BiG time....the husband was in an office pool. They bought a nice home, car, boat, etc. Started a business (successful)....and then they got divorced. Both are still very well off though.
I buy a ticket now and then....but the first time was less than a year ago...I had to call SO on the phone and ask how to fill out the ticket (I'm in my 30's, and not a very 'gambely' person)

My last roommate would get a $5 quickpick if the megamillion got really high. He'd come home and say "Gimme $2. We're even partners if we win." It was a comradeship thing. So now and then I buy one if it gets really high. I go home and ask my lover if he wants to gimme a buck before the drawing. It's just silly. If I won some insane prize, like over 10 million... I would split it with a bunch of people. I would create a gambling pool before cashing the ticket.

Before SC had a lottery, we would always buy one ticket when vacationing in states that had a lottery. Now we buy one maybe once or twice a year when the jackpot is over 100 million. Then we spend a hour fantasing about how we would spend the money. I love pondering how I would spend 25+ million dollars (establish a charitible foundation, buy beachfront property and build a dreamhouse, hire a full-time housekeeper, where we would travel first - probabably Kenya, and on and on). It's cheaper than buying a movie ticket and allows the same kind of escapist fantasy!

However it blows my mind when I see people we can least afford to buy lots of tickets spending money and seeming to think it is some sort of investment. Yikes!

I buy tickets. : Not regularly or anything. And yes, I know its a tax, I know the odds are not in my favor (what?!? you mean the odds aren't 50/50? either I win or I lose... ) I know all the bad things. I am a prize whore. I admit it. I am a sucker for radio call ins, the stupid incentives they offer at work, raffles...all that. Its a fault, I accept it in myself. :

And as for winning, I have won a few good things. Mostly from raffles and radio call ins....(a tv, a game system, concert tickets, weekend getaways, portraits, and tons more) but scratch offs and lotto tickets...well lets just say I have won my share of $50 and $20 prizes. I once even won $100. So my guess is I have prolly almost come out even.

1x/week, and I've won enough to pay for the tickets, so I'm not out any.
