I know the insurance offered by car rental companies when you rent a car is considered a scam at worst or excessive at best by many people. From my google searching it seems that if you have full coverage on your own car, it usually extends to a rental. Also, the credit card you rent with may offer rental insurance.

Anyway, the rental place I spoke to today insisted that regardless of the above, if I rent a car and it is damaged, they get to collect the deposit from me that I owe my insurance company, as well as any additional fee's they incur for loss of use while the car is being repaired. The woman said they don't file a claim with my insurance for that, they take the money directly from me. Hmmmm.

That seems really odd. Wouldn't they file a claim with my insurance company, if my insurance covers me when driving a rented vehicle?

I then said 'What if another drive hits this car? Wouldn't you file the claim with their insurance if they are at fault?". She said no, I had to pay for it. I said "So you are saying to me that a person can just go around crashing into rental cars without facing any consequence." She said yes!

Now, when I told this to someone else, they said she was almost certainly breaking the law by telling me that in order to force a sale.

What do you think? Her answers made no sense, and did seem like her way of forcing customers to buy the insurance offered by the car rental company.

I won't have any way to check this with my insurance company until tomorrow, and I am sitting here perplexed!

I think the woman was full of baloney. I used to work for a major car-rental chain, and I only pushed the additional insurance because I made a commision off of it.
