I just got back from visiting a friend and her 3 week old ds. He has reflux so of course prefers to be upright. He likes to sleep on her chest but gets very upset if he's held tightly against her (in her Bjorn, my babyhawk, or just in arms). We think its because the pressure bothers his stomach. Is there a carrier that will hold a newborn upright without squishing his tummy? She is very new to babywearing so I'm trying to keep it simple for her.

My poor middle dd had reflux so bad!

The Baby Trekker was the DEAL!

It is super comfortable even for chunky beh- behs like mine!

Carries into toddlerhood, too.

It was all that would settle her down and comfort her. She needed to be upright during and after feedings especially.

My little refluxer has done great with the Moby Wrap. I've worn him in it since he was about 3 weeks old and he still loves it at 5 months. It looks tricky to beginning babywearers - but it's been a huge help to us and with daily use we got the hang of it very quickly.

If at all possible my one word of advice would be to have two carriers - one will almost certainly need to be washed if you're dealing with reflux!

Give your friend a big hug - it's a long road, but we're joyfully now starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck!

I found the stretchy wrap and mei tai love when dealing with my little refluxer.

The great thing about the stretchy wrap is that you can have their legs tucked out -- the probem with her BabyHawk may be that baby doesn't like having his legs tucked up because of the pressure it puts on the tummy.

I would avoid slings/pouches for this reason; even in an upright position, the froggy hold puts pressure on the tummy.
