I want to transition my 12mos dd from disposables to CD, specifically FB. However I'm concerned because I have a HE machine and I can only use HE detergent. What does everyone who has an HE machine do? What detergent do you use? Thanks.

You're going to hear a variety of answers to this, I think...
I have a Duet HT, and I use an eighth of a cup of regular cheapo-five-gallon-bucket Costco powdered detergent. I usually do a cold quick wash, then a "whitest whites" cycle (simply because it has the hot wash and extra rinse). The main thing is to not use too much detergent in your wash loads.

I have a Kenmore HE, and I dry pail. I start off with a cold rinse and spin. Then I turn the dial to Whitest Whites with MINIMAL detergent. That is important. If you use too much then you run the risk of detergent buildup and then your dipes stink, repel, etc.
I use regular old Tide HE and maybe just a teaspoon or so. Alot of mamas though wash with baking soda and vinegar.

You may also find that you need to add more water during the rinse cycle if you are using hemp inserts.

I do pre-wash, regular wash and then second rinse. I set it for warm/warm but add extra (extremely) hot water during the pre-wash and all rinse cycles. I found wisk HE worked best with our water and I use less than 1/8 of a cap.

Okay so, let me see if I've got the general idea...

1. I can use HE detergent, but only about tiny bit.
2. I should first do a cold rinse/spin or a quick cold wash
3. Then I should do a "whitest/whites" wash (superhot) with an extra rinse.

Sound okay? Am I forgetting anything? Are the "free and clear" HE detergents better than the regular HEs? I really want to use HE, my machine is very tempermental when I don't use it and has broken on me twice. With 3 kids -- 2 potty learning, 1 who will be CD'ed -- and 2 adults, we have a ton of laundry.

Yup. Sounds right.
I use the HE detergent (Tide or Cheer...whichever's on sale) because we spent a lot of $$$ on this machine (Kenmore HE4T) after our Maytag died...and I do a TON of laundry...4-5 loads a day...the last thing I need is a broken machine.
But like PP said- very little of it for diapers.

I do the cold rinse/spin
then the sanitary cycle (prob similar to whitest whites)

Whitest whites setting probably has an extra rinse as part of the cycle...check your manual.
The sanitary cycle uses the onboard heater if your washer has one, and it's hotter than a regular hot wash (which is what whitest whites is) so be careful putting PULs in there.
