we currently store all our CDs in BIG CD books (like a big notebook that has sleeves for the CDs and their inserts). They take up a lot less space that way. However, we have saved all their original plastic CD cases, which fill up 2 or 3 boxes in the attic. Part of me thinks it's important to keep the cases (if we want to c pu tthem back some day, or give away the CDs, etc). But the other part of me thinks..."WHy am I keeping these things?" HelP?! What do you think? Is it worth it to keep them? Storage is at a premium at my house.
Thanks!
Honestly, with the availability of online access, any information on the cd cases (even song lyrics!!) the cases/booklets are not needed - unless you access tha stuff a lot.

I'd say toss it - or actually, if you have a freecycle group, freecycle it www.freecycle.org - there may be people out there that have need of the cases. - they can pull the sleeve stuff out themselves.

The only time the cases would be needed would be if you were to sell the cd's. Even if you gave them away, most people are ok w/o a case - they can always buy a new case/cover.

I have been seriously decluttering/purging my house of anything/everything that we're not using - so instead of storing it in the basement for the next 20+ years it's going to good homes. There are some exceptions to the rule of course, like my jogging stroller. (I'm putting that away as I'm due in Jan (it's getting too cold for me to go walking outside much - but we'll probably dig it out for our traditional Christmas light walk on Christmas eve) with a second child and my kids will be 21/22 months apart, so I'm on the lookout for a double, but I know the day will come again - all too soon, when my older son will prefer to walk while his younger brother will still want a ride. . . .)

It's hard to get rid of stuff - esp at first, but then when you realize how much neater/cleaner/organized your house is/seems, it makes it easier to keep going. . . ..

Love,
I would say toss them! Keep the booklets and artwork, but toss the actual cases. When we did that, we took the plastic cases to a local independent record store, who gave us about $0.10 for each case. We had hundreds, so we got a little bit of credit to spend at the store! You might try calling some stores in your area to see if you get any takers!

Okay, out they go! Thanks! I could use a cheerleading squad while I'm decluttering, to tip the balance in my brain. I just need one or two people to say "yes! you should get rid of that!"

Glad to hear you threw them out
I just did that this week, too. There must have been 60-75 cases. We keep our cds in an organizer, too, so I have no idea why I've kept the cases this long!
Cleared out lots of space Yay!

Please tell me you kept the back covers besides the booklets?

I didn't and I ended up a few years later with many CDs I wanted to sell but was unable to because I only had the booklets.

Umm...nope : I vaguely considered it, but it would have been A LOT of work. I had over 200. I'm glad to have them out of the house, though . Oh well, guess if we get rid of some we'll have to give them away instead of selling them.

I've been thinking about getting some cd books to keep our cds in, too. And wondering if I should save the cases or not. Thanks for the inspiration.
And btw where did you get the cd books?
Thanks!

I think we bought them at Target. It was a few years ago, so I'm not positive, but I think it was there. They take up SO much less space in the books. I was really glad we did it.

We recently put all our Cd's and DVD's into books , I love how tidy it is, I tossed all the cases except for 3 of each, just so we had something to put them in when a friend wanted to borrow a cd or dvd (it annoys me having them there though lol).

I bought my cd book at Target. It even zippers and has a handle.
I still have the cases (I only have one small box full) because I tend to change my mind about music a lot. Then, I can sell the ones I don't want.
I've toyed with the idea of throwing the cases out but I just can't do it. Of course, if I had something like 200 of them, yeah, I'd toss 'em. LOL.

I'm actually about to go through my cd's and take out more that I don't really listen to.

peace,
Interesting... We are downsizing and I know it makes sense to put our enormous CD collection in a book. I just love looking at all the titles nicely stacked though. I like to browse all the time and get inspired
We also have tons of tapes and vinyl. Talk about taking up space...

When I was first living on my own, I did the same thing with my CD's. Instead of tossing out ALL of the cases, I kept a small stack. I made some mini-collages, stuck them inside where the booklet would normally go, and turned them into coasters, as I had none.

The rest of the cases, I donated to a friend's used CD store (they were always in need of replacement cases), so I wasn't making a ton of garbage.

I'm actually also a graphic designer and I know the work and thought that goes into putting the CD "package" together. So to me not having the cases and complete original product would be like pulling all the vinyl out of their sleeves and just keeping the records. I just like the tactile and visual quality and process of picking a CD like a book, opening it, and browsing the case while I listen to the music.

I'm weird. I know

SO has about 700 CD cases in a few boxes, and he REFUSES to get rid of them! They're all cracked anyway, and it's not like he's going to trade/sell them (I've tried to get him to get rid of the ones he doesn't listen to and pick up some that he wants) so I want him to throw out the cases. It's impossible!!

I think I should just squirrel away a case or two every time he takes out the trash. In a few years, there won't be any left!!

I'm glad we won't have to deal with this issue. My DP burned all the CD's (200+) on to the computer and we have the CD's with original cases in the corner of a closet. Yes they take up space but only about 2 paper boxes.

Now tapes I would definately just donate. They don't have a long lifetime. Vinyls are timeless so somehow I have just submitted to the fact that they will always take up quite a bit of room, but that's okay. If we could make a special cabinet to store them in though, I'd be happier.

Dh probably has about 200 cd's. I can't get him to get rid of any of them, even though they have all been burned on the computer. He doesn't want to put them in cd books, either. I'd be happy if we had a nice and child proof storage unit for them. Maybe an ultimatum would help.

We're moving and we just got rid of about 500 CD cases last week. I put them all in a big contractor garbage bag out front. We live in a neighborhood where if you put anything of use out front it will be taken by someone within a half an hour. The poor guy who looked through the bag must have thought he hit the jackpot. I felt a little bad

DH won't part with "his", but the kid music is all in a big cd book and the cases are long gone. I have the inserts/lyric sheets in the back of the av cabinet (but should prob get rid of them too).
