My family and I are thinking of moving to the area sometime this summer. We are concentrating are efforts on the San Antonio area including New Braunfels. I remember reading something about the soil not being all that great. Is there anything special I need to know about growing my own vegetables in this area?

It's not that the soil isn't great, it's that it's different every 10 steps or so!!! You could get good soil, rocky soil, clay soil or all three. Also most newer homes have horrible dirt that the organic folks around town term "red death" it's what they bring in when they take away the native soil, cheap, horrible fill, gauranteed to cause trouble! Find the agriculture extention for the area you are looking at and it should have some good info!
We are just North of Austin, the 'center' of Texas is HUGE. Oh, the best thing about growing in Texas is you get a fall season and a spring season and lots of veggies overwinter!
have fun!
