Wow! I'm now glad that I couldn't afford to buy CF lightbulbs for my house! I'll stop feeling guilty about the environmental impact of the increased energy usage now!

Candles affect indoor air quality as well, especially after they burn out. Plus they're a fire hazard.

I've read that CFL's contain less mercury than what is released in the air when manufacturing a "regular" bulb.

I worry that people don't know how to "safely" dispose of the bulbs. There has to be some type of public service campain letting the public know or else we are up for an environmental nightmare.

Why can't the earth win just for once?

It was for a while, when humans weren't trying to "win" at everything. The industrial revolution royally screwed things up, to the point of no return

The author is very likely a paid consultant to anti-environmental groups. (Look at his web sites & affiliations.) He doesn't believe in global warming and is part of the conservative movement to discredit science and environmentalism. I would take this article with a grain of salt.

Well, this doesn't help the situation entirely but my dh, who works for Philips, sent me a link for Philips low mercury bulbs: http://www.treehugger.com/files/2007...ercury_flu.php At least someone is looking for a better way.

We have a bunch of these in our house too. But we just took some to Ikea with us the other day to recycle.

I had no idea they had mercury in them...

Our whole house is done in CFLs, the blue "plant grow" ones...I like them b/c the light is white and not yellow...I don't know if this article is enough to make me rid the house of them...Especially since we've been going over a year with the same lights. But I haven't seen a dip in our electric bill, probably b/c the electric company keeps raising rates as soon as I try to conserve energy....Grrrrrr:

From the current April/May 2007 issue of Mother Earth News:

Quote:

Most experts say not to worry about the health effects of exposure to the mercury in a compact fluorescent, even if the bulb breaks. As a frame of reference, one CFL contains 4 milligrams of mercury, just a fraction of the 500 milligrams found in old mercury thermometers...

In fact, using compact fluorescents actually reduces mercury pollution, because the main source of mercury pollution is coal-burning power plants--the most common source of electricity in the United States. According to the EPA, the power used during the life of an incandescent bulb breaks down to about 10 milligrams of mercury pollution, compared to only 2.4 milligrams to operate a CFL for the same length of time.

I'm having a tough time with the "mercury in my home vs mercury in my environment" decision, but I think the article in the link is a bit misleading.

Canada is going to phase out/ban regular light bulbs over the next 5 years so I hope they come up with something soon! I live 3 hours from the nearest IKEA and many Canadians don't live anywhere near to one so they will have to come up with something easier for people.

What is the verdict on halogen bulbs?

Thanks for all the thoughts, ladies. I get Mother Earth News and read that article, Jennisee. Thanks for posting that information!

I also haven't seen a dip in my electric bill at all.

According to Snopes, CFLs are not nearly as dangerous as that article claims.
