I like to give DS more difficult puzzles once he seems to have mastered a certain difficulty level, so he will stay challenged. However, my mother feels that I should just let him bask in the satisfaction of having mastered the puzzles he has mastered. He does still seem to enjoy doing them, even though he really doesn't need to work very hard at them.

What's more important being challenged or feeling confident that you can do something very well? (He's just under 2 if that matters.)

I'd leave the puzzles on the shelf and let him make his own decision. He'll figure it out. Most of us seem to enjoy a mix of things we know we are good at and trying new things to push ourselves. I would just leave the options open to him and stay out of it.

Keep a variety of levels available and let him choose which he feels like playing with. My daughter would often go back to easier puzzles, games, or books and repeat them often. As long as the more challenging material is available as well, he'll enjoy both.
