I thought I'd go ahead and put it out there. We're a family of 6 and live in a fairly small space (1700sf) and we seem to have and like a lot of stuff. I've really really tried to assess our needs and wants and made a lot of great changes in the last few years and yet I still struggle with the day to day task of running the household. I do good for awhile, but if one thing happens and I get off schedule (illness or a holiday) it all goes to h*ll. I'm easily overwhelmed by the chaos that exist at times as we really only have one living area and one eating area and there's no real alternative. There's never a time when someone is not here so I have to try and clean around the kids and I'm not sure how a neatnik such as myself gave birth to such slobs . So...for 2008 I want to recommit and challenge myself to purging, to simplifying, to relaxing, to enjoying and loving my family and my home.
What will you be working on in 2008?

HI! I could have written your post, but we are 9 in the same size house.
I'm with you on your quest! wanna be buddies? I have all the same problems you do...and am looking for good solutions.
I guess one of them is getting off the computer.....I have a love hate relationship w/ my laptop.....
I love it for connecting me with loved ones and friends I would not otherwise be able to be connected to.....but it does kind of monopolize my day sometimes.....
so what ideas have you come up with??

Hey mama!
I'm very guilty of falling into the too much online time trap. I found that if I make a daily schedule and tell myself I need to do xyz before I surf I accomplished so much more!
I would love to be buddies, us gals with big families and smallish homes got to stick together!

We're a family of 7 (+ an elderly uncle) in a 1600 sq ft house. I don't need a bigger house, just a better layout.

I am a total perfectionist - with a completely messy house. : I don't have time to get things up to my standards, so I never get anything done. I was brought up with the "If you don't do something right, don't do it at all." And, clearly, that backfired!

So I get everything done, then we...you know, live...and its a mess again! Sometimes, I give up and sometimes, I am motivated. (I must be in a motivated block of time, because I've been hanging out on the Decluttering/Organizing/Simplifying forums lately! )

I'd love to get on track!

sheesh ! i hear ya monkey princess! this houses layout stinks in the worst way......
I really do NOT like my house....and would love it if we just had less stuff....but with 9 people if everyone hasa little it seems like a lot.
I wish we could be really really simple.....I could....but i don't know about everyone else.
right now , my ds's have two boxes of STUFF that they just don't do anything with...but if asked....they have to keep it!
I am the worst offender by far.....I used to ebay for money....and I have boxes and boxes of stuff in the basement intending to sell it.
I sent a bunch to some FINS for the holiday....but still have so much!
I need help.
Can I play too?
We're a family of 5, 2 adults, 3 teenage boys, 2 dogs, 2 cats and 5 goldfish in a 968 square foot 1980's shoebox ranch.

I keep telling DH, "We don't need MORE space we just need less junk and use the space that we do have better.

We did a HUGE purge this spring, took over 600 pounds of junk to the dump and had a killer garage sale where we made almost $500 +the boys made $200 selling their own stuff.

I have to stay on top of the picking up and putting away, cause in such a small space, even one pair of shoes left laying out in the living room makes it look messy.
